Music videos were a tool to sell music.
Music is free now.
In the 90's it took hard work and connections to create a video and get it on TV. Some bands like NIN went the bootleg route with their NSFW stuff, but still made MTV versions that were spammed on MTV all day.
Any band can throw a youtube video on. How the fuck can you even find a good video with a million options?
i read an interesting thing that record companies were tired of MTV making tons of money and not giving them a cut, so MTV switched to cheap to produce reality tv to avoid paying royalties
