I've always kept my mouth shut about Claire. I used to know her back when she lived in Montreal before anybody knew who she was. When she was just this shy, awkward scene kid with about 5 friends in the world counting me.
2006 I don't know much prior to this, she never like talking about home. What I managed to get out of her is spotty at best. She was a complete outcast in high school. Bottom of the barrel loser, nobody liked her. A stoner, ugly, goth who talked funny. From what I can tell her parents were very strict and consistently caught her with weed, booze and occasionally psychadelics, so she was pretty psyched to be living on basically the other side of Canada. Probably her happiest year.
2007-2008 She gets into writing music because of a program she joined at McGill. This is pre-Grimes era, she was writing more and more music but it was pretty shitty stuff. Extremely rudimentary beats in this weird DAW she had. She'd stay out all night, party and go to these warehouse shows, smoke whatever made her feel good and wander home late at night. In mid '08 she started acting pretty distant, eventually someone loosened her lips at a party and it turned out one of those nights she walked home she got raped by some street wretch who lived near her apartment. In the fall of 08 a friend of hers killed themselves. It wasn't a very happy two years for Claire.
2009 She hit rock bottom. She was really starting to develop a dependency on some of her favorite substances, started looking pretty ill all of the time and was generally pretty depressing. Her music was improving ever so slightly as she dedicated more time to it. She was still going to class. Not too long into the year, the professor who got her into the music program killed himself. Claire started to get really distant, the very few people who were in her life were starting to get pretty worried at this point. She didn't go home for christmas that year.

2010 She kept bouncing around shitty job after shitty job. Waitressing, hardlines at a retail store, wherever she could make a few bucks she figured it didn't matter because Montreal is Canada's Detroit and it's cheap as fuck. Her roomate at the time let her use her laptop before, but she was getting more and more into it. She wouldn't go anywhere particular, she'd just sit at home and browse, while practicing more and more music. She was also getting somewhat of a name for herself in 09 doing more and more shows. It was early 2010 when she finally got payed for a show and it ignited some energy in her that the world seemed content with trying to stomp out. She at this point was convinced of one thing, she was going to be an artist. She started doing nothing but drawing and making music all day, skipping most of her classes, studying on the weekends, and she'd still go out and party. She also started to view her substance abuse as a problem. Things were looking up, she got pretty good at making music. She released Geidi Primes and everybody was happy to see more life in her than we had for years. She got more of an online presence and people outside of the shitty warehouse shows she'd play actually knew her name.
2011 I graduated in the spring, and the last time I saw Claire she was exploding. Out of necessity she started living better. Her apartment no longer looked like (and smelled like) a dump, she stopped abusing so many hard substances, and was generally improving. She stopped being this huge drag to hang around, she smiled more often, was starting to get really good at music. She was more like the Claire in 2006, a Claire exploring a brave new world. I think of Claire in the beginning of 2009 and the Claire who's touring the world right now and it's almost unfathomable that they are the same person.
She's been on a rollercoaster for 10 years, and Art Angels' tone being so cheerful is great. She was in a dark place for a while.
