Best selling, most original, critically praised, highly influential. Honestly find me an album bar Soulfly that matches the sound, that really taps into your primal instinct of pure spirit. Korn and Deftones dont even come close to the sound (tho Korns first album was actually respectable compared to their 'im40andstillgotissues' crap afterwards).

Theres a reason why the album did so well - it was both artistically and commercially crafted in such a perfect manner. The highest evolution

Are you telling me that Morbid Visions is a better album? Some kids who can barely play their instruments aping German thrash, doin the same shit contemporaries Sarcofago and Sexthrash did? Are you saying that "riffa" triunph over artistic vision that appeals to a mass audience? Get real.

That success deserves respect. Fuck your niche of "keepin it true" go lick your battle jacket the one your mom sew patches into

>Sepultura - Roots (Roadrunner, 1996) 8/10
Roots absorbs even Brasilian rhythms, including a ceremony with a tribe of the Mato Groso (Itsari). The effect is sometimes comic (if accelerated, the catchy rigmarole of Roots Bloody Roots could be prime Ramones), but at least Ratamahatta (with its surreal polyrhithm, matched by the vocalist's demented scat) and Breed Apart (a tribal orgy with hiccups of panzer riffs) achieve a new kind of fusion. It made people think that I listen to shit like Disturbed when I say that I listen to metal. The experiments do not end with ethnic promiscuity. The horror extravaganza of Lookaway spins around distorted sampling, monk-style chanting and stone-age growls, while the tempo shifts gear to indulge in a morbid exorcism. The weight of Endangered Species collapses under a psychedelic solo and drunken drums.
On the other hand, the drums and guitar maelstrom of Attitude, the chaotic fury of Straighthate (soaring towards the end in one of their most hammering guitar riffs ever), the epileptic fits of Dusted maintain the band's usual level of ferocity.
Roots is not only the album of a mature ensemble, it is an avantgarde work whose compositions have been carefully crafted.

Roots is the result of a good band wanting to fit into the whole 90's thing

The chief influence on Roots is KORN

KORN

No, it's Brazilian tribal music
>>
>>65173938
Metal used to be a champion of brotherhood and good times involving heavy rockin guitars sex drugs rock n roll pure hedonism

Now its just a bunch of nerds playing dress up arguing about subgenres, what is and isnt metal and generally being autistic uptight and unwelcoming
>>
>>65174032
And how did elitism do that?
>>
>>65174032
>Speaking to Live-Metal.net in 2009, Max admitted that he drew inspiration from some of the so-called early "nu metal" bands during the songwriting process for "Roots". He explained: "SEPULTURA did [take] a little bit of an influence from KORN and DEFTONES in some areas.

Beyond being inspired by the worst thing to ever happen to metal, it inspired more bands to make more of the worst thing to ever happen to metal

Also the album is shit

Internet allowed dissenting opinions of what is trendy/not trendy to run rampant online letting it become the norm as part of the counterculture against contemporary music

You could blame nu for this but your focus on reactionary bullshit but you had a choice to either let the mainstream do their own thing and champion positivity in your own stylistic innovation but it instead manifested into an us vs them elitist culture.

The Black Album is by far the best Metallica album

Only stupid /mu/ contrarians disagree, it's the most popular, it shows Metallica shifting their sound to a new generation, they took in a more rock and roll influence which not only propelled themselves but the entire genre. It's greatly respected
>>
>>65174032
The brotherhood is even stronger now though. nothing beats unified hate. you're just mad you're not in the club.
>>
>>65174164
>dissenting opinions
so your brotherhood of metal was silencing these opinions then. That doesn't sound very chill. And what about punk? Metal and punk feuded viciously in the past, mostly about who was really hardcore. Not dissimilar from nerds arguing over what is and isn't metal.

>>
>>65174218
Proof = /mu/

Punk v metal as well as thrash vs glam etc was tribal warfare. This was common ground back in the good old days. In the 21st century Weve moved beyond that now. Look at all the fusion genres and subcultures melding together. Even most punks now agree NOFX are a classic band and they were HATED back then. It is all acceptable. but true metal is still a bunch of dinosaur crybabies stuck in the past.

>using facts to counter ur opinion

>>65174384
Master of puppets wasn't creative or innovative, it was simply the apex of their style which was already outlined in previous albums

Black album is pretty creative and innovative, this is why Avenged Sevenfold are trying their hardest to copy it, but the black album is a weak ass album
>>
>>65174384

>>
>>65174374

But they had nerds then. Most of the musicians were nerds. And we have real men who like metal now.
by the way your whole argument is on the fans. You think fandom changed so the quality of metal did
>>
>>65174430
How was MoP not creative and innovative?
>>
>>65174407
So do you think that the best albums currently out are Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Babymetal, and Slipknot?
>>
>>65174447
>it was simply the apex of their style which was already outlined in previous albums

There were no new ideas for MoP, they used the same style they used on RtL and perfected it to make their best album
>>
Metallica were always shit, and will always be shit
>>
>>65174434
You're right. Metal has always been stupid and dumb.
>>
>>65174468
They advanced that style and expanded it incorporating more progressive rock and even classical influences into their composition.

Black album was more of a return to their influences, but creatively done

These albums are expertly crafted by the marketing teams and producers to appeal to mass audiences. On a pop scale yes they are the best - and that is very difficult to do. They have amazing hooks. Im not a huge fan of the bands personally but the songs stick in my head instantly.
>>
>>65174499
are we talking about the same band here? Metallica? Thrash Metal Extraordinaires?

Kill em All - New Standard for Thrash

Ride The Lightning - More Production Less Anger

Master Of Puppets - More Production Less Anger

...And Justice For All - Weird Production More Prog New Theme

all albums below this point aren't thrash and arent' worth it
>>

We are talking the same band but you seem confused about their music.
>>
>>65174551
>More production less anger

What about st anger lmao
>>
>>65174566
They really didn't do anything on MoP past stellar songwriting and flawless execution, it's probably my favorite album ever made, but it's not innovative
>>
The reason Sepultura's genre shift is creative and innovative is because they added to their sound; tribal rhythms and nu metal and other experiments. Black album, while creatively done, and a genre shift, was not innovative. It just went back to their original influences in NWOBHM and traditional metal while maintaining some of their original sound.
>>
>>65174589
that wasn't an album I listed, it wasn't a very angry album, it was an abortion of an album
>>
>>65174590
That stellar songwriting took influences from classical and prog rock that dwarfed albums from either genre. Suddenly this thrash metal band was playing sophisticated music on bar with what elitists listened to compositionally.

This chain of events started with RtL trying stuff like the title track and putting a ballad on a thrash album

Even AJFA was more innovative and creative by going full prog

HOWEVER the point I'm trying to make is that changing your sound entirely isn't a reason an album is good, we both agree that MoP is an amazing album

Cowboys from Hell isn't good because it's a departure from Pantera's previous music, it's good because it's good

I saw Uncle Acid while super-duper stoned on a brownie and got to meet and blaze with some of the band members afterwards. Kevin is kind of a recluse tho and I never got to meet him sadly. There were a bunch of us standing in a circle passing joints around and one guy had rolled a spliff instead of a regular joint and when I unsuspectingly took a puff on that I got such a headrush I thought I was gonna chundy. Warn people about tobacco alongside your bud before sharing, yo.

Probably better marketing too. The ghostwriters/backing musicians are hella talented but thats japan for ya. They do that well.

My point is the listeners. Attila's schtick is to be hated (after they tried to be party metal) and the most obnoxious band ever. Which they succeed at. Imo they have some fairly catchy well written tunes (about that life and rage are bangers) and arent meant to be taken seriously. The amazing thing is that most people (entry level Download Fest moshers mostly) who see babymetal as a "bit of fun" take Attila really seriously even though theyre obviously meant to be a joke. The lyrics are hideously dumb on purpose. How are people so dense to miss that? But then again bad publicity is better than no publicity.>>65176187

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the main vocalist, she's a better singer than most other women in gook power metal

The two other girls singing are absolutely cringeworthy and they'd greatly improve if they just stayed quiet to be honest.
>>
>>65177091
I can't stand women in metal man, even in power metal where they should technically be more tolerable since the music isn't as agressive
>>
>>65177123
Clean women vocals only work well in doom metal and sometimes power metal and only if they're the main vocals.
Women backing vocals are often pretty cringe inducing.
I don't mind women harsh vocalists since you can barely tell them apart from male harsh vocals.
>>
>>65177162
yeah, I haven't heard a single good moment where there were female backing vocals

Has anyone noticed that /metal/ is very very different from the rest of /mu/. There are so many artists that /mu/ likes that /metal/ thinks is total dogshit and vice versa.

What's up with that?
>>
>>65177308
/mu/ values image and aesthethics over actual music
>>
>>65177308
/mu/ is filled up with /mu/tants, whereas /metal/ is generally filled up with people who don't go to the rest of /mu/. Instead, /metal/ is a mishmash of /v/, /a/, /tv/, and /pol/.
>>
>>65177308
/metal/ pretty much determines what they like based off of how manly it makes them feel.
>>

/mu/ hates /metal/ and /metal/ hates /mu/.
>>
>>65177326
So in otherwords, take none of what either place says seriously because it's full of literal retards?
>>
>>65177308
Metal fans in general don't like metal that appeals to non-metal fans not because that music isn't good but because metal fans are image-obsessed contrarians
>>
>>65177368
I don't like metal meant for non-metal fans solely because the music is really fucking terrible, some tolerable bands pop up once in a while like vektor but that's a very rare case
>>
>>65177308
>/metal/ hates hipstershit and contrarianism
>/mu/ is very hipster and contrary
>/metal/ starts becoming even more hipster and contrarian than /mu/ to keep hipsters and contrarians out

we literally circlejerk hipster thrash, power, speed and death metal to keep hipster black, post, -gaze and sludge out

we've become /mu/
>>
>>65177368
I always just assumed /metal/ just hated that out of sheer principle and it had nothing to do with actual quality

Then again I liked Sunbather and Colors so it's probably just me.
>>
>>65177162

I know it's a bit soft and slow and lots of folk if they just heard the song wouldn't think it's metal at all, but it's one of my favs
>>
>>65177425
colors is decent but sunbather is a 0/10
>>
>>65177416
And this is a good thing. Elitism is healthy. If people want to discuss their post-metal/atmogaize they can go to the numerous other metal communities to do that instead of turning us into an exact same clone of everybody else

>>

>>
>>65177162

It's easy to tell them apart cause they sound like, you know, a woman doing harsh vocals. Unless they do those br00tl guttural vocals, then they might sound like a man.
