Repost from last Thread

I have a Budget of $350 for a new Amp. Low wattage is fine, i don't plan on taking anywhere bigger than a small coffee shop. My Only requirement, Valve Only. Obviously Cheaper is better and I have no objections to buying used. I need Suggestions. I play pretty much anything, but gravitate mainly towards grunge and metal

I was looking at the Blackstar HT-20, thoughts?

>>
>>65146614

No, it's all in the strings. You could have all the best fretwork and setup, but if your strings are rusted to death, playing it would be a torture.

nigga please that's like saying it's all in the strings because if all your strings are broken you can't play.

Why is that pedalboard insulting? Newbie here.
>>
>>65146771
No idea, bro, quite honestly.

It doesn't stop some faggots being offended by it on a regular basis, though.
>>
>>65146771

>>
>>65146830
Yes but why were they making fun of it? Do the pedals suck? Is it the arty design?
>>
>>65146845
Expensive pedalboard + difference in personal taste perceived as insult + juvenileness + 4chan.
>>
>>65146845
I can't speak to the motives but they were saying things like "$600 for a $30 pedal". The wooly mammoth is very famously a simply fuzz pedal that can be made with as little as $15 worth of parts. The one he has has an added 3 band tone circuit... Well, I'm in no position to criticise myself.
>>
>>65146909
>>65146867
Ahh, okay thanks for helping me understand.
>>
>>65146909
A $3,000 amp doesn't cost more than $300 in parts to make.

An iPhone 6 costs $200 in parts to make.

If you have ever bought anything considered high-end, the actual parts costs were only a fraction of their final cost and if you can't understand why you're a moron.
>>
>>65146710

So you are okay with playing rusted strings? I'm talking about those that would leave your fingers with trace of rust once you start playing on them.
>>
>>65146606
honestly I would rec trying to get a vox ac15c1, of course it depends on your desired sound but its such a classic nothing sounds better imo
>>
>>65146966
Well, in this case there's very little cost associated with the labor and equipment required. The simpler the circuit, the less it should cost.

The reason a smartphone costs so much is in no small part the components, but also the sophistication that's beyond what, say, a child with no prior experience could learn to do, and do, within an hour.

>>
>>65147031
Go ahead and build a WM7 and sell it then. Actually, build one and make it sound the same.

Then ship it to me I'll record a comparison of both, if they sound absolutely exactly the same I'll ship you back both pedals and Paypal you $600 out of my pocket.
>>
>>65146984
No, but it just seems nitpicky to consider it part of a guitar's playability, you know? I don't want to post, "Reminder that 90% of your guitar's playability is frets & setup, provided you are using undamaged strings, provided you've warmed up already, provided you are playing a typical electric guitar design, provided you are not playing slide, provided you've warmed up properly, provided you don't have your amp turned very loud and microphonic pickups."

There's a ton of shit that will make more difference that frets and setup, such as taking a large chunk of the neck out with an axe, but I don't consider broken stuff part of a typical guitar. Similarly, it seems weird to consider unplayable strings when that's a part that's assumed to be replaced when necessary.
>>

Okay senpai chill down and enjoy a picture of a Nippon guitar
>>
>>65147122
Look man, it's not that hard to read the values of 3 caps, a resistor, and 3 pots. By all means I could produce an accurate clone. You don't need to be defensive, I'm sure it was worth it to you, that much is obvious by your attitude. You got your money's worth. But the pedal is nothing special. Other than the artwork, of course.
>>
>>65147194
I'm still proposing you a bet that can earn you $600 + a pedal worth $600. If you're so confident, why wouldn't you take it?

By the way, I didn't pay a dime for that pedal.

My point is that every kid that has learned how to read an schematic and solder thinks they can replicate every single pedal in the world yet every single copy that I've ever heard and compared in my life - and they weren't few - sounded different not only from the original but from each other. Following an schematic can be simple. Getting exactly the same components isn't and that's a major factor.

Just think of the hundreds on Klon copies that all sound close but different from each other and the actual Klon they were trying to replicate, and the actual schematic for the Klon with all the right parts has been available for a long time now.

Of course that if you're willing to settle for "close enough" and therefore mediocrity, then that's none of my business. Good luck building 'close enough' pedals or Joyos/Behringers.

I'll give you my P.O. Box, you ship to Brazil, Paypal me any Customs fees (anywhere between $0 to $100, depending on luck) when the pedal arrives (or ship by FedEx with the fees pre-paid by the sender) and the bet is on.

>Inb4 box of dragon dildos
>>
>>65147548
Brazilian Customs inspects every single package that enters the country (which is why international packages can often take up to 2 months to arrive) and informs the receiver if the contents don't match the shipping form description.

And if it's something illegal, well, the receiver will be questioned about it but the shipper is quite fucked since that goes directly to Interpol.

That being said, I'd be happy to resell a box of dragon dildos. Heard they go for quite a bit.

thoughts on piezo on an electric/solid body guitar?
>>
>>65147110
I have a similar rig, Micro Dark into one of Thomann's V30 equipped cab, it's great, except for the awkward tone knob. And it's got enough volume to play over a drummer.

>>65149159
I think that too, a bevel on the top horn isn't going to be very useful.

>>65149965
From the demos I've heard, they look very interesting. I wish they were more common in production models though, I've only seen them in the JP EBMM and these Godins.
>>
>>65149011

Very interested to know this too. Living not in the US, it cost a ton to ship them over, and even more to ship it back if I don't like them.

I'm more concerned about how it will play out
>>
>>65149965
One of my bandmates has a JP EBMM with a piezo pickup and it sounds amazing for clean stuff. Super articulate.

>>65150533

hi /gg/
I am recording prepros for my hardcore/metalcore band atm, and since i am broke as fuck i have to use demo versions or free vsts for distorted tone. any reccomendations on how to get a decent vst distortion tone? i heard lepou is good? its only for prepro so it does not have to be release tier.
thanks in advance
>>
>>65150845
It's vastly inferior to a simple three band EQ, and I think the "left part" of it (6 to 12 o' clock) sounds too scooped for my taste, so I tend to leave it in the same position generally. If you've got an OD or an EQ pedal you probably won't have that problem.

TSE808 > Ignite Anvil (lead channel with little gain) > Ignite NadIR
It takes a bit of tweaking but I can get an acceptable tone that way, add in some noise gates/compression depending on the stuff you're using.

music theory question:

if i want to play in the major scale in the fifth position, can i make chords in it?
ie: if i play the C, E and G from this part of the scale, would it still be a major C chord?
>>
>>65146716
Fuckin tasty. I want a Warped Vinyl pretty bad. I had a Talons for a little while, but I didn't try anything close to the settings you're using. How do you like it like that? Also, are you using it with 18v?
>>
>>65151331
No matter what you do, if you play a C, an E, and a G, you'll be playing a C major chord. Chords are just combinations of notes, regardless of octave.
>>
>>65147369
Not that anon, but you act as if zvex climbed the Himalayas, found only the rarest(because rare=good) parts, compared hundreds of components, all to finely tune the WM circuit. Well, they didn't. The reason so many clones don't bother with that is because anyone with exposure to pedal building knows the only thing boutique pedal makers give more attention to than them is being sure to put in "alpha" pots.

different circuits resulting in mediocrity would make sense if ZVEX had actually targeted a sound with the components they chose. I doubt they did.

I built a tele, and it's great. But the humbucker is quieter than the neck by quite a lot whether it is bucking, split, or phase inverted. Any ideas??? Are bridges always quieter?

I built a starcaster and already repositioned the bridge, but the intonation won't work. It's always sharp on the first half of the neck, by enough to personally annoy me.

Are there any other things that affect intonation a lot?
>>
>>65151720
Yeah i mean like aff, bullet, etc.
>>
>>65151733

>>
>>65151716
Leave the tubescreamer VST like it is, or only touch a little bit the tone knob depending on the tone you want. As for Anvil I generally go for a shittons of mids and not too much highs.
Don't be afraid to touch the settings really, the only two traps you can fall into are scooping the mids too much and using too much gain.

>>65151733
>I built a tele, and it's great. But the humbucker is quieter than the neck by quite a lot whether it is bucking, split, or phase inverted. Any ideas??? Are bridges always quieter?
Sort of, I've heard that the same pickup will be quieter in the bridge than it will in the neck. Either raise the bridge or lower the neck pickup.

>I built a starcaster and already repositioned the bridge, but the intonation won't work. It's always sharp on the first half of the neck, by enough to personally annoy me.

I'll give it a go (raising the bridge). The neck is beefy.

Is there any way to check if the pickup is faulty? It "WORKS"

Yeah I think I'll have to plug the repositioned bridge and redrill.....

I think the neck angle is fucked too and this one was a setneck job

Might have to shitcan it.

Oh I forgot to ask, is there any problem associated with basically raising the bridge pickup straight to the strings since they don't move so much near the bridge?

One of the reasons the JP line is my current favorite. It's very cool and adds another layer of possibilities since you can blend it with the magnetic pickups or use it alone.

So I want to add an output jack to my guitar.

I think that the electronics being passive it would be a simple process but if anyone has done this it would be a big help.

The reason I want to do this is that I have an effects pedal that is a big part of my sound, that goes directly into the output jack.

This gives me a perfect muddy sound but no sustaon so i want a second uneffected signal to run over the top of it with better sustain.

As a sidenote, any ideas on how to mount it semi-permanently to my guitar?

A lot of this song lacks articulation, particularly the leads. You hit on some good moments that could stand on their own. I think you should try to trim out some.

I mean the leads themselves. In terms of articulation I'm referring to construction, not technique. As in articulating your idea. There's a mix of parts of the song with clear emotive ideas, and parts that have more of a filler sound to them. Try to pick out which parts sound good to you. Also, cut back on the transitions in general. It's a very common mistake to put too much effort into transitions, mostly because nearly everything sounds a bit abrupt when you've been working on a section for a long time and switch to another. Truthfully that abruptness would benefit a song like yours when you consider the tone of the chorus. Your chorus has a bit of bite, so of wouldn't hurt to give other parts of the song a kick through various means.

tl;dr Get to the point quickly. You've got something to say musically, say it.

It doesn't go out of tune super easy. It has a trem with different characteristics. It is a shorter scale. It has different pickups. It looks different. It has more switching capability.

Not my guitar of choice but there's good reason for most guitars to exist. Clearly this guitar is different enough from other guitars to justify its existence, as if that is even necessary.

It'd be better to know the exact order and such, I don't plan to play it out on my guitar or anything, just have a better idea while listening. As you said it's got a wall of sound vibe. Particularly if there's any switchup during transitions or verse.

>>
>>65154650
the shorter scale makes it super easy to play, it might give you an extra fret to your reach. Also being shorter the strings take much less pressure to press, so 11s might play like 9s on a strat. Bar chords can get tiresome, not just for players with poor finger strength, but also regular players during long energetic sets.

Depends on the wiring, but probably. If the speakers were wired in parallel then yes, but if series no.
>>
>>65156229
Well, the guitar will be fine, it's a question of if the amp will be okay with that load, and if the speakers won't be driven too hard. As far as protecting the remaining speakers, Just be wary of how loud you turn the amp. As far as protecting the amp, if it's solid state you should be fine. If it's tube, try to find out what loads it works with, and measure the total impedance of the speakers. Google that shit, I don't know how to do it.

Massive guitar noob here (even though Ive been playing five years).

A few months ago the treble switch on my electric stopped working and only seems to make a droning quiet sound when its played.
Now the rhythm switch is starting to flicker and do the same every once in a while?

Is it a common problem and is there a way to sort this easily for someone who doesnt quite know what they're doing?
>>
>>65156413
what guitar you got, sonny-jim?
>>
>>65156500
Just a standard SG. Sorry should have said.
>>
>>65156515
check the soldering on the switch, and the pickups. For there to be a quiet sound could mean a shorted pickup coil, but since the rhythm(please refer to this as neck position) is also flickering it's probably the connections to the switch or the switch itself. If re-soldering the connections doesn't work replace the switch. If that doesn't work investigate the pickups more thoroughly. Replacing a switch is easy and cheap, but repairing pickups is hard, and replacing them is expensive. So start with the switch. Post pics of whatever you can.

The Elite American Strats.
They have some bells and whistles that aren't available anywhere. Newer noiseless pickups, new truss rod wheel adjustment, compound neck shape.

I'm looking at three different interfaces right now, the Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface, the Behringer XENYX 302USB, and the Alesis i02 Express Audio Interface

I'm leaning towards the Alesis because it comes with Cubase, which would improve my /prod/uction skills.

My budget is $100. What interface should I get? I play mainly blues-rock

Slabs are comfy when you're entrenched in your ways, but carved is obviously superior. By the way, I'm thinking of adding contours to my telecaster. >>
>>65161359
No, there's nothing like that. You're watching too much TV, man. Everyone "naturally talented" put in the time. Something like natural aptitude applies more to how quickly you learn. But how quickly you learn because of your talent pales in comparison to how quickly you learn due to effort when it comes to guitar. That's something you learn when you've been playing for a while. If you don't study and practice seriously, you learn a lot slower. But you do have more fun. Try to strike a balance.
>>
>>65161722
What do you mean by reliable? Think about that.
>>
>>65161359
>are there really people who can just pick up a guitar for the first time and play it?
literally never unless they studied theory intensively, which would still be baffling.

talent is basically a natural flow that isnt pure institution. Sure you can be good but if you cant be talented ifyour own creations and style and generic

Those are around $300 iirc. For that price everything but the bridge is pretty reasonable. I don't think you can do much better for the same money, but you might be able to do as good for less money. I can't think of a tele like that off the top of my head, but chinese teles are a pretty competitive market right now. Sorry I don't have great info.

By all means they're a good deal, maybe not the best but fuck me, when has anyone actually managed to find the best deal. Best i know of without doing research.
>>
>>65162348

>>
>>65162293
Sure, good start. Buy a looper, improvise to your own loops. Way fucking easier than looking up some backing track with the same rhythm, tempo, and chord voicing you want, which would be a fucking miracle. Also lets you quickly try out two guitar parts.
>>
>>65162433
yeah I definitely need more gear, I just have a guitar and a really shitty amp so there isn't anything I can do to make playing more interesting
>>
>>65162210
I'd play that if it didn't have a retarded finish and headstock. Poorly.
>>
>>65162152
Eh, there's only so much you can practice when you first start out though. I picked up the guitar when I was 15 and just taught myself using song tabs and youtube tutorials. Eventually I started incorporating the pentatonic scale and began learning more and more difficult songs. I never really took it seriously, just something fun to do in my spare time. 10 years later, I'm starting to realize that I've actually become a pretty respectable guitarist.

The best way to get better is to just play, it doesn't even matter what. You'll only get out, what you put back in. Bad habits will happen but those tend to work themselves out over time.
>>
>>65162583
I don't really think you need more gear, apart from the looper. Effects are easily saved until recording if you can imagine them, for now. If you want to do stuff with effects, start with the cheapest multifx you can find on craigslist, and sell it when you have enough experience to know what you want. Or, start with computer fx.

Anyways I didn't have an fx other than my amp's gain for my first 4 years of playing. I won't go on about it being important not to have fx starting out, that's bullshit (though if you're easily distracted consider it), but you certainly don't need them to learn.

>I prefer small headstocks.
Why? Aesthetic or different reasons? Generally curious. I heard larger ones can help sustain.

The behringer clones in this case are clones of $200 pedals, whereas most behringer clones are of boss or other fairly cheap pedals. And there are people who pick these particular closes over the tech22 ones. The bass one because muh tone, see talkbass, and the guitar one because it's got more capabilities than the tech21 one.

I really don't want to shill for these but these pedals deserve an exception to avoiding chink shit.

aren't those di pedals?
would you use them at all if you have an amp?

Purely aesthetic.
I've read that too, that mass in the headstock helps with sustain but honestly I can't trust what I read on the internet anymore...

Yeah, i was going to say i don't know if i believed the sustain thing either. I figure the string vibrates on the opposite side of your finger, and the hand would prevent it from happening. Hence why they add mass to the bridge instead. But whatever. I have no preference, it's just gotta look good with the guitar it's on.

they're preamps as well as DI pedals. You can use them for DI(pretty important for gigging when alternatives aren't available) and you can also use them for distortion. Basically the reason you see the bass DI in so many rigs is because you can put it in front of your amp for super versatile gain. Lets you do all of the following: overdrive your amp, push certain frequencies of your amp harder than others, get a more layered distortion, and sim cabs/mics for DI.

A two-tier distortion is great for if you need a distorted tone all the time but still want to be able to use a blues style dynamic distortion. Yeah, you can do that with regular distortion pedals too. If that's all you use it for you can think of it as an amp-like distortion like other pedals.

Anyone have experience with one of these? I want to buy my first loop pedal just for messing around with, This seems like a good entry-level looper that's fairly cheap too ($70-100). Thoughts?
