The Handsome Family - Through the Trees (1998)
>alt-country
Borders on pastiche at times, honestly, the more gothic, dark elements are so fucking cheesy and corny it hurts. But the more straightforward moments are actually quite nice, mainly the instrumentation. And the album as a whole is very well done, just quite hammy and heavyhanded. I also can't get into the vocals at all, but at least its mostly a somewhat enjoyable listen.
2.0+
Calexico - The Black Light (1998)
>americana, alt-country, roots rock
This is the closest to a 3.5 on this list, but it /just/ misses the mark. It's a very good album though, I love how all of these different styles (spaghetti western, tex-mex, roots rock) get mixed together, and the band mostly pulls it off very well, it's composed wonderfully. My main complaint is that it does get a /bit/ unfocused at points, and it's definitely overlong. And the instrumentals definitely do fare better than the tracks with vocals, even if they're both very good. Overall, a very good record.
3.0+

This was comfy and some bits gave me spine tingles. The guy’s voice was kinda funny but I got used to it by the end. This will get some relistens.

>Roy Montgomery - And Now The Rain Sounds Like Life Is Falling Down Through It And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out and We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves and We Should Probably Make Shorter Album Titles

I think he was posting yesterday or something
I think it actually helps that I haven't heard any of these before.
>Six Organs of Admittance - Dark Noontide
Alright, brown and a deep sky blue? Shit-tier color palette. I do like the brooding mysterious atmosphere though.
>Great Lakes - Great Lakes
Cool-ish color palette here. I love how the cartoon fire really sticks out against the black and white skyscrapers, but it really doesn't do much for me as a whole. Interesting concept, though there has to be a better execution or something.
>Bo Hansson - Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings
I'm pretty sure this is some kind of joke because it's pretty shit. Like, why is the drawing so shitty and half backed, and what the hell does any of that have to do with LotR anyway?
>Drop Nineteens - Delaware
Luckily for Mort though, I really don't like the "take a random shitty picture with an old camera" album cover, and this is no exception. It says nothing, conveys next to nothing. It doesn't look aesthetically pleasing, but if it's trying to tell a story or something instead, it's failing there. I don't give two shits and a popsicle who that chick is or what store she's in front of.
>Of Montreal - Paralytic Stalks
I was never much a fan of this album cover. Not sure why. I mean, I guess it sort of creeps me out, but not really.
>some slavs - russian field experiments(?)
Reminds me of the ending to the Seventh Seal, which is one of my favorite shots in any movie ever, so good job. I'm a big fan of this aesthetic.
>Fishmans - ゆらめき in the Air
Love everything about this cover. Great color, abstract but aesthetically pleasing design. Bonus points for the very high quality artwork scanned by the Fish man himself.
>Tim Hecker - Love Streams
I honestly adore this cover until I zoom in and see the awkward poorly-photoshopped skeletons or whatever those are. I think I see what they were going for, but it just comes off as sloppy.

also, i'm curious as to why do you have a strong preference for high res covers?
Vinter: Massimo Volume - Fausto
Good track. Sometimes sounded like a basic alt rock track though with it's melody and following of the soft-loud-soft formula (which was followed well) but I liked it. Fairly strong stuff and I like the spoken word even if I don't understand it. Unfortunately for you, I liked Letov's track more. It's definitely not a 1/5 though.
Letov: Dr. John - Mama Roux
Groovin'. Nice comfy track. Loved the keyboards and Dr. John's got a nice voice. Background singers were a nice touch too. MAMA ROUUUUUUUX. Very good track.
Up next: Co V.S. TrishAh
>>65122732
Good question. Guess I just like to see what I'm looking at? It bugs me to no end when there are clearly details in any picture that I can't make out, not just album covers.
Okay it's done. I kept trying different heads and eventually just gave up and put Scaruffi.

co: The Avalanches - I'm Taken
Lovely. A blissful song that makes me feel happy inside. It's pretty repetitive but never gets dull for me cause it's so happy. I imagined myself having a great day when I listened to this track. Really enjoyed it.
TrishAh: Blind Willie Johnson - Nobody's Fault but Mine
Emotional stuff. Liked that good raspy strong voice and the cool guitar playing. What's even cooler is that he was blind. However, I preferred co's rec because I'm not that big of a blues man. Nice song though.

Well the thing is, I just don't know how to work with pdf files on my laptop. But the task I'm looking to do seems simple enough. I just need the album art to fit on this template. Only the front is what's important while the spine and back can be the same shade of yellow as the bordering.
Here's the template:
http://www.crypticcarousel.com/O-Card_Template_600forPS.pdf
Pic related is obviously the art. I'd appreciate anything you could do for me, and I'll make sure you get credited.

Decided to do comet on a bus V.S. Dogwander
comet on a bus: Chad VanGaalen - TMNT Mask
Interesting bleep bloops. Did not really dig the guy's voice or the tune though. I don't think I really disliked this but I didn't really like it either.
Dogwander: Henry Purcell - Dido's Lament
Though slightly histrionic (I guess that's the nature of opera though), I thought this was a pretty beautiful song. It made me feel melancholy. Lovely voice, great strings, great aria. Really liked it.
Also, is it just me or is this template uneven?

Not a bad decision. Everything I've heard from the guy has been great. Especially noteworthy in Animal Collective's latest album despite having a minor role
Mercury Rev - Something for Joey
I like how layered this felt. Especially during the chorus when it gets all noisy and shit. The inclusion of the flute was very nice. Also, nice drums.

How do you determine decimals? What determines if an album is, let's say a 4.4 instead of a 4.5?
>>65125288
I have a system where I rate each song out of 5.
I then total them and divide them by the amount of songs, multiplying the answer by 10, and then dividing by 2. Giving something like 3.4 for example.
Then I may take out or add a few decimals for other factors, such as cohesiveness etc.
It's a pretty stupid way to rate shit, but I enjoy it.
>>65125273
Yes
>>65125518

>>65125339
Do you take the length of the songs into account?
>>65125685
What? Like weight the ratings based on the song length? I may consider that, but it may make the process overly complicated.
However I know if the album consists of one or two very large songs, I may attempt to split into segments if possible. Unless it's a drone album or something of course.
I'm going to bed now. Bye /daily/

Martin Siewert & Martin Brandlmayr - Too Beautiful to Burn
There are those times in music when an album name accurately describes an album. Some examples of this would include works such as Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come or Dead's Musical Abortions. Some examples where this did not happen include Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come or Throbbing Gristle's 20 Jazz Funk Greats. I'd say this is a time when it did happen. Though its reasonably abstract and has sounds some may find unpleasant, I think this is a beautiful album. The beauty here is not a conventional sort of beauty though. The kind of beauty here is eerie and strange yet enjoyable at the same time. It made me feel both comfortable and uncomfortable. It played with my ears in ways I found incredibly enjoyable. It made me wonder what new sounds would be popping up as the record goes on. It could just be because I'm pretty new to EAI but I felt this was excellent. Wonderful music. 5/5.

I paused after 5 min having the same ideas as you and figuring it wouldn't be a bad idea to read up on it first. After doing so I enjoyed it so much more and even gave it an 8. It really helped in my case, so I hope it does in yours. (But don't ever call him a poor man's Brakhage again, I will find out where your house lives)
>Mop Mop - Lunar Love
Very chill album. It's dubby, it's jazzy and it has a wide array of influences. The kind of music you listen to with company. It never gets too experimental.
>Dibson T Hoffweiler - Oakland to Sebastopol
Another solid fingerstyle guitar album. The first 2016 one I've heard this year and it's on par with the stuff that came out last year. The album is fairly lengthy and I had trouble listening to the whole thing because there were no real highs or lows, but it's consistent throughout.
>Coin Locker Kid - Damnonia EP
Coin Locker Kid is at it again. This time he's released a four track EP. The songs are all very much what you can expect from him from his previous releases, but the lyrics are even better than before. He went from samples to a keyboard on Manic Pixie Dream World and now he's introduced a wide array of new instruments. The keyboard made the musical side of his work a lot more rigid, but this time he's back with chaos. Very, very good again.
Give it a spin if you liked Traumnovelle or anything else by him. It's goood

I love how blatant the band can be with their use of MIDI synths. Made Step-Daughter sound like the soundtrack of a late-80s computer game. Which is cool.
And oddly for such a mellow album, the guys look properly issed on the cover.

The latter ones are pretty cool yes, some of the more varied ones. Title track is also pretty nice. You might like this trio album by him, though not a lot, it's still more active overall if anything for the drums. And some great compositions as well.
Listened to off GIVINGBEAR's rec; the Lyklas Ocre EP. Damn, this was a pretty solid little ep. Usually cosy’d be the word I'd use to describe a lo-fi bandcamp folk ep, but this actually wasn't (for the most part). Considering this is clearly a one man passion-project the music here was surprisingly challenging and engaging. The first track has a vibe that actually reminded me a little of Dean Blunt's Black Metal in its ungrounded dreamy vibe. Really chill jangly pop, kind of like Love through an alt-country lens. Really nice, but I've heard it before, so I thought I had this ep sussed. Imagine my surprise when the next track hammers in and it's straight up indie-rock with a distorted lead while still maintaining a distinctly roots sound with a wistful vocal line.
Much of the album continues like this, and most of the tracks are equally excellent and unexpected, the singer remains in the top half of their range which does give the album this kinda childlike sunny quality, apart for the occasional moment where they drop spookily low for this almost moan-y type sound. Track 4 drags on too long and it kinda feels like some of the ideas get drowned under the lo-fi production but this was excellent, the sound of a talented songwriter throwing a bunch of ideas down and seeing what sticks. I’ll be excited to see where they go next.
Anyone else wanna throw down some recs?
