Alphabetical order. Why any other way?

Anyway, I went to my local store today and found that they had this on sale for $60: https://www.discogs.com/Talking-Heads-Speaking-In-Tongues/release/1443184
I was really eager to buy it at first, even with that price tag (since I had almost the same amount in store credit), but when the clerk gave it a spin, it skipped at least 3 times on the first track alone. That was a real disappointment, and enough to make me turn it down. Instead, I got a first edition pressing of Close to the Edge, an early promo copy of Ommadawn, + a couple other LPs and CDs.

I should really visit my other local record store one of these days. There's two near me, and here's how they compare:

>The one I frequent more often because it's closer
+ Great selection of both old and new pressings
+ Staff are helpful and engaging
+ Plays killer tunes through the store's sound system
+ Sells decent to good turntables
/ Prices vary from decent to really expensive
- Places price tags right on the fucking cover that are a pain in the ass to remove
- Ugly website

>The one I don't go to as often because it's further away
+ Stricter policy regarding the records' condition/rarity
+ Great trade-in value
+ Fucking massive jazz selection
+ Places price tags on the inside of the sleeve instead of on the artwork
+ Helpful website that includes the store's catalog
/ Usually only one guy on staff
/ Still has way more dollar bin records than the other store for some reason despite the aforementioned policy
- Doesn't seem to buy electronic music

I should make another visit to the store that's further away, but at most I'll probably be able to make one more trip before I start moving a couple states away this summer

Last name.
If you filed your books by first name, everyone would laugh, no reason it wouldn't be the same for music.
I am still torn as to where Captain Beefheart should be.
>>
>>65118305

Since it's an artistic name his real name is nothing like that, put it on C. Would you put "Panda Bear" on B?
>>
>>65118379
Panda Bear is clearly a full name, meant to be taken as a whole.
But if you go by most catalog registeries and other norms, when you have a title, it's the name that is used for classification and not the title.
I'm too autistic for my own good with these things.

As someone on a budget who has no soldering skills, is this something someone who's only casually into vinyl can just ignore? Like my receiver and headphones are in the $200 range each, so it's not like I'm going for optimal audio quality.

I just got this in the mail. It is a rare test pressing of one of my favorite albums, 9 Lives to Wonder by the Legendary Pink Dots, on 220 gram vinyl. This is numbered 14/15 and has handwritten track titles. It is also now the rarest item in my music collection.

do you remove the plastic cover off of your records? obviously when it's a gatefold, but when it's a single LP do you keep or leave it ?

do you put the record itself into a paper sleeve and place it behind the album sleeve then put into a plastic sleeve? that way you're not tearing the original inserts or record sleeve when you're taking the record out

I don't even know anymore... playing, storing and handling them are becoming too cumbersome

Most stores have all openings on the same side for easy access to the LP. I think that accidents can happen and stagger store them. That way I don't pick it up one day and the record flys out the back and hits the floor.

>outer plastic sleeve opening up
>LP sleeve opening to the right
>Inner sleeve inside LP sleeve opening up

Paper and glossy inner sleeves are cancer though, tons of surface scratches from dust rolling around in them. Before and after the factory. Gotta get me some poly vinyl inners at some point.

Now I need to get it. Already have the first one.
Based Druillet should make more covers now that he isn't writing anymore.

What makes vinyl superior in your opinion? What's the point in buying vinyl records?

I don't care which is superior, I've been to enough shows to not be able to hear much of a difference between good digital, CD and vinyl records. And neither will you once you turn 30.
I also have some CDs, cassettes and a hard drive full of music because muh exclusives
Reasons why I'm into it are :
>I like collecting stuff
>vinyl can be dirt-cheap used, and a cheap vinyl record usually has better content than a cheap CD (though it probably changes a lot depending on where you live, where you shop, etc)
>having to go search for record exposes you to things you do not know since you have to dig through crates, etc. Also applies to CD.

But what if the

>band has two drummers
>>
>>65128603
I'd imagine it would be more convenient to collect everything digitally instead. Digging through crates doesn't seem very effective compared to just searching stuff on the internet.

I don't think that's the point though, the point is to show your amazing and superior taste to everyone else because it makes you feel giddy.
>>
>>65128658
>take the first letter of the first name of the drummers
>convert each into a number according to their place in the alphabet
>pick the number at the average between them (cut to inferior if you have a decimal)
>translate it into a letter according to its place in the alphabet
>done

How much does /vinyl/ usually spend on a record?
>>
>>65128672
>Digging through crates doesn't seem very effective compared to just searching stuff on the internet.
That's exactly the point.
Searching on the internet gets you directly to what you are looking for, digging through a crate exposes you to things you may not know.

>>65128727
Never more than 30€ for something new.
For used stuff, it depends. No more than 5 bucks for something I don't know at all and pick out of curiosity, more if it's something I know or am looking for.

So in your opinion internet doesn't expose you to new things? You must be doing something terribly wrong..
>>
>>65128830
it does but the recs you get from last.fm, discogs or whatever you use, the things that are presented to you (or rather advertised because that's how everything works online nowadays) often have something to do with what yo uwere originally looking for. Sure there are lots of way to expose yourself to things you don't already know but honestly, it's not as efficient as a dive into any 3-bucks-bin full of stuff you had no idea even existed.
>>
>>65128903
That approach is assuming that you're blindly stumbling upon recs based on your already established tastes on a site like last.fm. The scenarios you laid out aren't equivalent in any sense.

Can't we just admit that most people who buy vinyl just want to show off their music taste and their epic vinyl collection to other people? There's nothing else to it.
>>
>>65128903
It's literally just for the fun of it. Sure online is much more "effiecient," but it gets you out of the house some to go search around
>>
>>65128984
>have no friends
>last person to see my collection was the electrician who came in to fix my radiator 4 monthes ago
>don't post collection online because who cares?
But yes I'm clearly doing it all for the attention. God forbids I enjoy things other than people complimenting me.
>>
>>65129023
So what exactly do you enjoy about spending your money on outdated form of source material? Just materialism and collecting?
>>
>>65129073
>Just materialism and collecting?
Yes.
Collecting is fun.
You don't get it. Which is fine. Collecting is not something you should look at pragmatically because no matter how you look at it, it doesn't make much sense. And it's not supposed to.
>>
>>65128480
>new
The limited edition? Are you sure?
>>
>>65129099
I think I get collecting because I've got a lot of music in digital form myself. It just seems dumb and in some cases vain to spend money and effort on vinyl, that's all.

Have you seen Alan Zweig's Vinyl? It's a movie about compulsive vinyl collecting, might interest you.
>>
>>65129182
"collecting" digital files and collecting any form of physical object doesn't really compare I'd say. you can virtually accumulate as may files as you want whereas any physical collection requires care and effort and that is precisely what makes it a hobby you can involve yourself in. Whether its vinyl records, books or boat models or anything, it's the time and effort you put into your collection that rewards you. You maintain something in good, proper shape.
No I haven't.
And while we're on the topic of movies about vinyl records, if you haven't seen it already I'd suggest you watch Scratch. If you don't care about hip-hop, jump directly to the segment about crate-digging.
>>
>>65129271
Don't the records just sit on the shelf 99,9% of the time though... why would they need extensive care? You're talking like vinyls are your offspring that you need to caress.

If one of the main aspects in the hobby is to dig crates, you could just as well just take notes of the records that interest you and later check them out on the internet. That'd arguably be much less of a hassle and you save yourself a lot of money (and shelf space) in the long run.

I'll take a look at Scratch, sounds interesting.
>>
>>65129160
sorry, missed that you linked to the limited edition, i was confused already.
>>
>>65129358
>why would they need extensive care?
A single record doesn't need extensive care. Technically a good brushing before you play it could be enough. Although it's good to dust a record once a month or so. That's not a lot.
It becomes a bit more once you need to do that for 300 records.
also, taking notes on records you found can be good for stuff you find new, or that is worth a bit because this way chances are it won't be bought next time you drop by.
Depending on the store, it might or might not be a safe bet for something you find in a cheap bin or something that has a "buy three, pay for two" offer of some sort.

Is there someone that might be able to answer a question about volume? I have a vintage sony turntable, running through a preamp, and then into a harman kardon rcvr. I have a kenwood dual tape deck, and the volume is perfectly normal there, but i have to turn it nearly all the way up to get any volume from the turntable. i have checked and rechecked the wiring, is it something with the preamp? do i need something else in addition?? i really appreciate the help

I don't buy vinyls because I have a computer and a phone, they store music for me through downloading and streaming. One single phone is 1/8 the size of a single vinyl yet it can hold much more music! The best part is that the music is already organized for you on a phone.

I go by band alphabetically, then by date within each band. Kind of like how it looks on Spotify. I find it the easiest to locate what I'm looking for that way.
