I'm really open about discussing music with my friends typically because I've found that they don't normally dislike what I listen to. They just haven't heard it. But it probably also helps that I'm a music major and so are a bunch of my friends

The trouble with Emo band is that they are so sadness oriented that they end up turning off most of their audiences.
Aspiring musicians take this statement to heart:
Normal people like HAPPY MUSIC!
They feel like shit when they hear sad music and end up leaving the venue or changing the radio station.
Most successful bands have a fun, happy, upbeat style that takes up most of their set.
If they have a gem of a sad song or two they will play usually one per evening. If you can be happy most of the time but also pull some tears out of your audience when the time is right, you become legendary.
