Does South Korea have any good music? I want to believe that there's more to it than kpop (please no kpop), but I've never heard of any other music scene in Korea.

Sad Legend is a black metal band that has a cult following here, David Thomas Broughton currently lives in Seoul but from the UK. Not sure about anything else really.

>Kpop threads every fucking day

There's a burgeoning underground scene over there. KoreanIndie does an okay job of giving some of them exposure, but mostly just the indie pop and alt rock shit, with some rap and post-rock.

There was a little bit of diy punk going on during the 90s with Crying Nut and The Geeks. It quickly became commercialized so now there are shitty hardcore bands popping up via major labels.

I figure they'll grow, but at a snail's pace, since the country is so conservative and straying from a stable career path seems to be considered social suicide, and often literal suicide. Their suicide rates are consistently one of the highest in developed countries in the world, if not the highest.

Yeah, this is the kind of impression I get. It's funny because if you look at Japan, you can find plenty of good stuff (albeit overwhelmed by similarly dull jpop). Korea's economy and general social framework seems to be much more conservative.

At the same time, I know that there's occasionally subversive film over there, so I dunno why it can happen with movies but not music.

That's sad. Stay Happy, South Korea! Don't let the bastards grind you down!
>>
>>65052343
For a country where most people are so obsessed with their image it's very interesting that they're still very conservative.
>>
>>65052484
If you think about it, it's probably more of a 'because' than a 'despite'.
>>
>>65052484
Christians actually make up quite a high percentage of their populations because they recieved a shitload of evangevelical missionaries after the korean war so that probably has something to do w it

also japan has a much more renowned underground scene despite a similar emphasis on stressful careers
>>
>>65052343
SK has a pretty high average IQ, could correlate with the suicide rates.

Don't forget, porn is illegal in S. Korea.
>>
>>65052595
Ahh yeah forgot about that. I think once the generation before the younger people die off it will be legalized. I'm not that educated on that though

i am saddened by the lack of underground korean music, but then again it's a pretty small country so there's only so much culture that can come out of it.

>>65052214
interesting, i've yet to hear a single good korean metal band. any recs on where to start w/ them?

>>65052687
