Weighted keys vs synth keys.
What manufacturer is the biggest hack of all and the most overrated and why it is Yamaha.
Why keyboards still have dog, alarm and helicopter sounds.

I'm thinking of getting a keyboard. Is this a good choice for a beginner? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Casio/CDP-130-Digital-Piano-1398177057926.gc

What's the cheapest midi keyboard I can get that has *polyphonic* aftertouch?
>>
>>65049578

Yeah, pretty much. I've tried almost every keyboard product they have (they make way too many) and they all feel soulless. Sounds are always just "fine", key action is always just "fine". They're never inspiring.
>>
>>65051947

>>
>>65051959
poly aftertouch has sadly been largely abandoned

you mostly have to look at non-conventional keyboard controllers now
the keith mcmillen K-board is one such example, and can be had for chips

wish I never sold my Ensoniq EPS, that thing had poly aftertouch too

Thanks, that doesn't look too bad tho it's a bit small. I've seen the Roli Rise and Haaken Continuum of course and they are pretty expensive (but also pretty expressive I guess).
EPS looks pretty rad btw, maybe I should be looking at some old keyboards noone cares about anymore.

New Vaxmidi boards are looking pretty good, taking preorders now and you have to assemble them yourself IKEA-style. $650, 900 and 1150 respectively for the 4, 6 or 8 octave versions. And they have poly aftertouch.

Check craigslist brah. These old beasts are heavy as fuck and technologically obsolete. I've bought two Hammonds, each for $50. One was a trashy transistor Hammond from the 70s that had a built-in Leslie so I chopped it into an amp cab/Leslie. The other one is the M-100 which was working great but needed a lube and a cleaning. Bought from a Hammond tech who had a garage full of old organs. With modern synthesis a Hammond is whicked easy to synthesize, so you don't need a multi-hundred pound tonewheel anymore. When my M-102 was new oin 1965 it was the same price as an average house. It's NASA-tier engineering. Now you can get them for free if you're willing to move it

Maybe I should ask /g/entoomen, but whatever.

I want use computer keyboard as MIDI controller and I'm looking for a software which would send MIDI events to Linuxsampler. I know there are programs like VMPK, but I want to use it without GUI, in terminal. I've only found midikb (https://github.com/ovenwerks/midikb). It's pretty good but it can't play two keys at once, so...

Hey guys, im a pretty good guitarist and I've taken classical piano lessons. Lately I've realised if I want to compose I'll need a keyboard in my bedroom, so I'm using this summer to save up for a keyboard and a MacBook. What would be the best keyboard I can get? My budget will probably be somewhere around $600-$1000. I want something I won't need to replace for a long time. Weighted keys are essential. I would sort of like it to be a synthesiser. i would probably be producing idm tracks or just piano ballads like Brian wilson's surf's up. Google isn't really helping me figure out a good keyboard though.

Thanks.

>>65057679

4chan pls
>>
>>65057679
Depends. Do you want it to have most of the sounds you would use onboard, or would you be hooking it up to a MIDI program?

If the former, you'll need some kind of workstation. They're usually pretty expensive. Roland and Korg both make good ones.

If you're going for the latter--which I would recommend--get a Casio Privia PX160. Great keys and it's only $500 USD. Best bang for the buck in its price range, IMO.
>>
>>65048885

I second this. We need /keyboard/.

So, anyone have some good resources. Let's start building the pasta
>>
>>65059612

For production purposes I think I just need to be able to work with sounds via a DAW. Probably makes everything a lot easier as well.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
>>
What's a good keyboard for an intermediate?

Obviously at least half-weight keys with a strong grand piano sound.

Also preferably with MIDI.
>>
>>65055914
> that mic collection.

Very nice.
>>
>>65059923
No problem. The Casio would be right up your alley, and then when you're not hooked up to the computer you'll have a good quality digital piano to play.

>>65059953
I'd recommend the Privia 160 to you as well. MIDI compatible with good keys for the price range. If you're serious about keyboard work, at any skill level, you really ought to have good quality hammer action keys.

I have a Casio 2400, 61-keys. It's okay for recording stuff to my DAW, but the keys aren't velocity-sensetive.

What's a good keyboard with velocity-sensetive keys, at least 61 keys, with a budget of $500?
>>
>>65060112
Do these things ever go on sale?

If it were 100 cheaper I would buy it this second.
>>
>>65060180
Synths are fucking alien to me, I'm still stuck to conventional music.
>>65060239
It's basically their most present feature and the most complained at the same time. But well, their grand and upright pianos are top tier still. Dunno nothing about the synths.
>>
>>65060239
Yeah, the reverb is decent enough. I don't think Yamaha makes bad products, I just don't think that anything they do really stands out or is better than what other companies have in the same price range.

I've tried the Arius, I've tried the P115, I've tried the CP4, I've messed around a bit on one of their workstations (motif I think? can't remember for sure), and my friend has a little EZ220. They're not bad or anything, I just can't think of any reason that I'd pick any of them over a comparable Korg or Casio or Kurzweil.

How do good teachers teach?

I had one when I was 10 than taught scales without really explaining them and had me play shitty songs from a shitty book.

I haven't played since then. Plugged in my old keyboard and started learning last week. Crammed the notes and locations on the keyboard every single day for 6 hours a day. Realized there are half-steps in scales and relearned them in 10 minutes.

I'm already playing (pretty shitily, but identifiably) River flows in you. I can play carly commando everyday and comptine du' whatever and mad world.

I'm 27 so my brain is an old turd too.

What do good teachers do that I can do?
As far as I can tell this is pretty much it besides experience and practice?
>>
>>65060858
The answer at every price point is Roland, in my opinion. But "best" is subjective.
>>
>>65060912
I didn't really start getting far as a keyboard player until I developed a sense of direction, so to speak. You have to think about what kind of player you want to be, and then find resources from there--if you want to do classical piano, that's going to involve very different resources from blues piano, for example.

I'm scared of blues and rag even if it does look fun.

I used to be a tromboner, so I'm more about feels than the technically difficult stuff, so I like a lot of chopin and yiruma. The French have a lot of nice classics as well with happier moods.

>>65061133
Any of them work? I can only imagine how wrecked those diaphragms were. Think I read somewhere that older microphones didn't use diaphragms of the same type that we do now, probably dreamed that though.
>>
>>65060990

Care to share some examples. i'd really like to have reference points so we can make this a common thread and get people started with these threads
>>
>>65061282
They all work! Most of them are in mint original working condition, a few of them I had to fix up to get working, and only 2 of them needed repalcement/non-original parts, sadly.
>>
>>65061345
Have you shown those in a /g/ audio thread?

I'd like to see how you did all that.
>>
>>65061398
no I'm actually not too fond the the /g/ threads. there's nothing too crazy about it, i just know how they work and i love them so the TLC required comes easy. i have a power buffer with various wheels and polishing compounds, so i can really get all the parts stripped and/or descaled and polished to a mirror if i want, or i repaint if that's what it needs. as far as the electronics goes it's usually a matter of rewiring or fixing solder joints, or just fabricating a replacement part or just finding a cheep, but similar-sounding, modern dynamic element to replace the dead one. it's not really rocket surgery, you just need the right tools for the job

It's not terrible but not great either. The PX150s went for 500 when they were the newest model; once the px160s came out, all the new but unsold 150s went down to 400. So you'd be paying the same price for a used one that you could at one point get for a new one.

Oh, I offered 350. It comes with the pedal and seat. So that's like a total savings of 25% off their best price.
