I need something in the range of 1-1.3k, a 24 fretter, set neck or neck through.

Any ideas? Ibanez seems to be all bolt on. Was thinking of a cheap no frills DC127
>>
Also, my strat is missing one of the locking tuner knobs. Anyone know where I could by one? New or used doesn't matter. I've looked online and only ever found full sets.

Really loving my setup atm. The Tonal Recall should be here as my second delay in a week or two and then I'll be mostly set.

Except for the reverb. I love the Procession, I really do, but it's way too over the top and it's kind of a one-trick pony. I need more traditional reverb options, ideally a Strymon flint but something like a BlueSky or a Neunaber will also do.

Why do you have a cable connecting the power in the the guitar output on that TS9?

I need help dudes!
I really want to learn Horizons by Genesis (Steve Hackett). The only good lesson I've been able to find is this one, and the tabs out there seem to be lacking:

Do you fellows have any sneaky tips to get around the paywall? Or know of this lesson being hosted elsewhere? Its a long shot, I know. But I don't want to pay $20+ of my peasant currency to learn one song.

NB: I have a terrible ear so learning it myself is pretty much out of the question.

It's obviously a patch cable draped around the pedal. You can see the end off the top left corner by the knobs.
>>

Not sure if srs, but no its a patch cable just laying around the pedal as to avoid draining battery life.

Has anyone here played with a boss gt-100 for an extended period of time? I played with one and fell in love with the pedal fx, running into an actual amp but didn't get a chance to use the amp sims, and I understand they take a lot more effort to use. The features were pretty incredible though. Van anybody speak to the quality of amp sims? I'm mostly interested in milder gain settings.

I got a new 2x12 today. It's a stereo cab with a separate input for each speaker. Each speaker is 4ohms, which is what my amp likes so I've just been playing through one of the speakers. It's loud as fuck but what would happen if I used a cable like pic related to plus into both cab inputs at once? Is that bad for my amp? Does that create a rating of 8ohms since it would be both 4ohm speakers at once? I'm an idiot but I hope someone will be able to help me out.

Can anyone tell me why some people have such a hard on for (modern day) Orange? The Orange amps of today even the expensive ones aren't anywhere close to sounding like the old Orange amps that made the brand famous. Old Oranges had massive amounts of clean headroom and were medium gain amps at BEST.

The worst part of it all, the prices. For the price that you can get a new higher end Orange, you can buy a Matamp, Green, or Electric which still use the designs that made Orange famous.

I find the reverse reverb is pretty bland on its own. Reverse delay with the time like all the way down into some other reverb works out better. It's funny bc initially the reverse setting is what sold me. Fucking epic plate and hall on the grail IMO.

>>65046312
the thing with chipped paint is you have ti actually remove it instead of painting over. That's pretty difficult. Ultimately you'll have to decide if it's worth it to you.
>>

>>
>>65046358

>>
>>65046374
cool, that's about what I figured. I'll go with the Neo, then.

>>65046380
I was probably one of the people who advised you against it because it's really difficult and 9/10 times it comes out looking like complete shit unless you're a professional. But I think you should go for it, it sounds like it's a project you want to do and you like the guitar. You can't fuck a body up too bad. just don't excessively sand in any important areas. Sanding finish off is a fucking task.
>>
>>65046434
>recommending reranch
Jeez, he already is complaining about price and you want him to use reranch? They cost more on the basis that they're vintage correct colors, which they aren't.
>>

I think a key to getting a good result with a DIY refinish is to use paints made for idiots at home, not the same paint guitar manufacturers use.

So my birthday is coming up and I'm thinking about asking momma for a mastery bridge for my jag. I'm looking for a bit more sustain and from what I've heard mastery bridges add some sustain. Does anyone have some experience with them?
>>
>>65047001

if you want sustain play something other than a JM/Jag

Mastery are great either way.
>>
>>65047056
Yeah, I'm aware short scale guitars aren't good for sustain, and I'm not looking for much just having issues especially at the higher frets where it almost sounds like a dead fret. It could just be a string height adjustment that I need.

That being said the fact that you say they're great is really all I needed to know. Just making sure they're not a waste of money.
>>
>>65047001
I have one on my Jazzmaster and I love it. The tuning stability is great and it's a solid, well-built piece of hardware. As for sustain, it seems to hold notes much better than the stock bridge. I guess it would depend on what your current bridge is. I don't know if upgrading to a Mastery or Staytrem is worth the expense if you've already got a tune-o-matic and what you're after is just more sustain. There are a lot of other ways to get that including string type, string height, scale length, pickups, playing technique, pedals, etc. I was planning on replacing the absolute shite stock bridge on my JM anyway so I knew the upgrade would be worth it.
>>
>>65047097
They're a huge waste of money. It's just a bridge, it's not going to give a Jaguar more sustain. Coming from someone who bought a replacement JM bridge because it was absolutely necessary.
>>
>>65047102
it's a classic player HH, so it does have a tune-o-matic. I haven't had terrible tuning stability issues, although I have been avoiding using the trem. I think if I oiled up the nut it would help. I upped the gauge from the 9's it came with to 11's. I'm not sure if the nut needs to be filed for them but it seems to be ok.

In the end I wasn't really expecting a huge change but since I wouldn't be paying for it it wasn't a big deal. They seem like solid bridges, just wanted to be sure it wasn't a gimmick
>>
>>65047197
It's not a gimmick but it's also definitely more for musicians who play consistently and understand the value of good hardware. If you've done all that already and you've got the TOM bridge I would have your mom spend that money on like, a used valve combo amp or something, since having the bridge replaced will cost at least $250 if a competent luthier is taking care of it. Just my opinion, though. if you're satisfied with your set-up and want that extra bit of gear to put your satisfaction levels over the edge a bit, then I say go for it.
>>
>>65047197
It sounds like you need a professional setup from a shop, not a $350 meme bridge.

Getting free tab pro is easy as fuck

I've only uploaded like 4 MBV and 2 Dino Jr tabs and they gave me tab pro.

IIRC you get tab pro for free if you contributed at least one thing to the site prior to the release of the premium features

Quick question to all, should playing musical instruments be viewed as 'competitive', like sports?

I know some people who would practice on ends just to win a competition, but when it comes to that point, is it still considered playing music, or just a self jerk to perfect some muscle memory?
>>

It's a parallel splitter, so your impedance would be halved, creating a load of 2 ohms.
>>
>>65048189
You should practice it as like you would practice sports, always pushing your own limits.
But playing it is not, the best performance is about being precise.
>>
>>65043579
What kind of patch cables are you using there?
>>
>>65048189
I never treat guitar as a competitive aspect of my life. I just pick it up and play, sometimes noodle over backing tracks for hours, play along to songs I know or figure them out by ear, read tabs, write songs/tabs. The moment I sit down and decide to improve a scale run's speed by an extra 5bpm because so and so can do it faster than me, my love of guitar is zapped.

I was a national level gymnast in my younger days so I know a lot about competition, guitar is expressive for me as faggy as that sounds
>>
>>65043072
Shimmed the nut on my bass, literally solved all the problems I had with it. I probably did a bit of a hack job on it but it's definitely not moving so I'll just leave it as it is.
That said, I think I'll need to redo the setup and intonation because now the action is a bit higher than what I'm used to.
>>
>>65050285
Take it somewhere and have a proper nut cut now that you know what you want. It's not expensive and far better to get a good nut on there.
>>
>>65050436
Nothing like a good nut.
I'll do that eventually, but the thing is there already is a nice brass nut on there, the previous owner just cut the slots too deep. So after my sloppy setup it should be done for now and if I decide to play it for the next years I'll get a new nut and have a professional setup done.
>>
Honest question here. which do you think is a higher act of virtuoso, vai/petrucci/satch kind of shredding, or the jazz kind of 'shred'?

two clips to compare,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ql_bHgaQQZE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbHc5i4O2tc
>>
>>65050590
the jazz one, its so much more sophisticated and interesting
>>
>>65050590
Either of those shredders are more interesting to me than Malsteem.
But jazz seems more sophisticated and interesting as said before. There's some musicality to it that gets lost if you just shred mindlessly
>tfw is way easier for me to be fast than to be melodic
Just fuck my shit up senpai
>>
>>65050590
Playing fast doesn't mean you shred. Shred is more an act of showmanship.
Picking Yngwie is sorta cherrypicking though, he has absolutely no sense of subtelty compared to vai/petrucci/satch/a whole lot of guitarists.
Just listen to the second guitar solo at 3 minutes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5OmzUEm504

>>65050728
>>tfw is way easier for me to be fast than to be melodic
>Just fuck my shit up senpai
Same, I can play fast but it's useless if you can't play anything worthy of it.
>>
>>65050285
>>65050436
>>65050550
By the way, since I never had a professional setup done, is there usually a big difference? Like, I don't always know 100% what I'm doing but right now my bass plays very smoothly and I just set the intonation to be as close as I could possibly get it, what would a professional do differently? Just from experience, was it worth it to have the setup done professionally vs doing it yourself?
>>
>>65050590
It's both kind of the same. Pat Martino is pretty much a wanker, not that I don't like him but he's really just spitting out notes as fast as he can most of the time.

I would much rather listen to chill players like Jim Hall or Billy Bauer
>>
>>65050903
a basic setup is just - intonation, truss rod adjustments, string height, and pickup height

if the luthier actually knows what he's doing he will make sure the nut height is good too. the nut is really the only difficult part when setting stuff up, if it isn't at a good height then he will have to either shim it, sand it, and/or file or fll+file the string slots if they aren't quite right

the nut stuff i'd take to a luthier, personally i'm just not confident enough doing stuff like that to my nut
>>
>>65050590
i like listening to jazz fusion guitarists way more than the vai/satch type of players

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuY0_JCHaF4

i'd honestly say al di meola has the most accurate and dynamic picking hand i've ever listened to
>>
>>65050975
Hmm, thanks for the input. I suppose when my hackjob of a nut shim gives in or doesn't satisfy me anymore I'll take it to a luthier and have a new nut cut to exactly my preferred string gauge with the perfect height as well, and at that point I'll have him do a complete and total setup with my strings as well.
>>

I picked up the guitar recently, got a pacifica 112v and I noticed that whenever I play a chord and lift my fingers at the end there is something like a strange metallic sound from strings. I only tuned my guitar but I don't have it set up or anything, is that sound only me playing badly or should I adjust something on the guitar itself?

Does it make the same sound as it does if you hit all the strings very lightly without fretting ? If so that's just bad muting technique.

Anyone know how I get in the ball park of a Bob Mould tone? Seeing him live quite a few times and browsing the Internet he sends a dirty signal to a delay where it's split and sent through something called a harmonizer and sent to a tube amp and solid state amp.

There's plenty of rich musicians who use minimal gear, some that suck and some that play amazingly. There's plenty of musicians with huge effects boards that can sound great with or without them.

You don't have to be an accomplished artist to want to use less or more effects, or want to use higher or lower end gear. It's a personal choice.

Had a guitar for almost 2 years now and I still can't play chords. Wtf is wrong with me.
>>
>>65048189
As far as developing your abilities, you should always be competitive, driving yourself to be the best you can be.
But when it comes to performance, what matters most is making it serve the song. If you can play it competently, stay within your abilities AND make it sound good enough that people have a good time, that's really all that matters. Ultimately, nobody cares if you play Wonderwall or I'm Yours as long as you can do it well enough to bring back that feeling they had when the words REALLY meant something to them for the first time.

You put no effort into learning how to do chords well.
>>
>>65059814
ez senpai. learn the moveable major minor and 7th chords and then practice them while watching tv. muscle memory kicks in then and you're good
>>
>>65059881
It's really hard.
>>65059952
I don't know what those are. I use tabs for everything.
>>
>>65060001
>don't bother learning chords
>complain you can't play chords
Apply yourself, I've been playing for two years and the only chords I can't pull out of my ass are non-major/minor chords with extensions.
>>
>>65060111
what do you mean by non-major/minor chords with extensions?

like 9ths or 13ths (dominant chords) or diminished or augmented?
>>
>>65060001
how is it hard? guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn chords on, every shape is moveable. not the same with piano
>>
>>65060111
>>65060165
I'm trying. I used to play bass. I never fucked around with chords. My fingers keep muting the strings and guitar strings are harder to press than bass strings are.
>>
>>65060243
>I'm trying.

Yet after 2 years of trying you don't know what major and minor chords are?
>>
>>65060141
Fancy chords like Bsus4add9 just to pull some random exemple.

>>65060243
>guitar strings are harder to press than bass strings are.
They're not. Unless your guitar is setup like garbage, but you'd notice that after two years. Being used to bass isn't an excuse, that means you have at least some musical background and experience. Basic chords aren't hard, stop whining and practice your chords.
>>
>>65049192
Okay, thanks. I just searched Y cable to get that pic. Is there some kind of mono splitter where I can send 4ohms from the amp's output through each 4ohm speakers? That would be ideal.
>>
>>65060311
>Bsus4add9
this isn't a chord you'd ever have to use

>>65060243
honestly the shapes are easy, just learn them. especially major and minor shapes

>>

Hey you never know, it sounds neat, and if I'm not wrong you could use it instead of F# Dominant 7th for some more interesting sounds.
But yeah I was saying Bsus4add9 just to take the piss out of it.
>>
>>65060819
Fuck, it's minor seventh, not dominant seventh, I don't know why I said that.

I have relatively hot humbuckers into a tubescreamer into a dirty amp - how do I make my taps (think 'hot for teacher' intro) get roughly the same volume as my picked notes? Compressor?
>>

yes. ideally you want to tap harder though

Gear - Cheap Ebay Guitar

Desired Gear - I was hoping I could get some help on that. I posted something in the last thread, asking what guitar would be good for slow blues/heavy metal (think SRV and Electric Wizard). Response was http://www.andertons.co.uk/solid-body-electric-guitars/pid23424/cid671/epiphone-les-paul-custom-pro-in-ebony.asp

Is this a good one to get? I've been seeing mixed reviews on Epiphone's products.

Years playing - About two years

Fav guitarists - SRV, Albert King, Hendrix, Jus Oborn, Greg Ginn

i have some electric buzzing issues with my guitar, /gg/.
when i'm not in contact with any metal parts on my guitar, my amp buzzes really loud. but as soon as i touch any metal part on the guitar, the buzzing reduces or goes away completely, depending on the settings. but no matter the settings, the buzz comes back when i'm not in contact with the guitarparts.

what's going on here?
>>
>>65061112
Electric wizard use SGs, not LPs.
You're never getting the same sound without some big ass fuckstacks though

The same thing will happen with that splitter too.
It's a simple matter of physics when you try to power two speakers with one output, and how much impedance the amp sees depends on how the speakers are wired.
A splitter connects the speakers in parallel by definition, so the net impedance will go down. If the two impedances are the same as yours are, the total impedance will go down by half.
>>
>>65061547
so what I want to do is impossible?
>>
>>65061193
So, what should I get?
>>
GUYS
Anyone got a pdf or epub or something of Hal Galper's "Forward Motion" book? I desperately need it can't find it.
>>
>>65061189
Most likely a grounding issue, i.e your amplifier is plugged into a non grounded socket.
>>
>>65061189
It's a simple grounding issue.

All audio circuits need a ground point so they can throw away the random noises that float around their circuits. That way they can run at their most quiet.
The third prong of your electrical outlet is what most people think of as a ground point, and it is the most common. What most people don't know however is that the human body is ALSO considered an electrical ground point. It's not as good as that third prong, not to mention very dangerous and perhaps fatal under the wrong conditions, but it IS a ground point.
And that's why your amp doesn't buzz when you're touching the strings of your guitar.
>>
>>65061568
Yes. A 4 x 4ohm speaker array could give you an impedance of 4 ohms.

Most amps can handle some mismatch. The output devices just see a difference load.
>>
>>65061769
The amp is grounding you, not the other way around.
>>
>>65051767
I found one in with all my shit. Have no idea where it came from, never saw anyone i know with one. I looked up the serial #, it says it was made in '87
>>
>>65061597
Not him, but does your current guitar have neck whip? For what you want pretty much any guitar with a humbucker will be fine. So that doesn't narrow it down much. What you need to look for is hood playability and value. Or, alternatively and what I recommend to beginners, a good neck and hardware. Taking your frets to get fixed is the only way for a beginner to be sure of good frets is to have them leveled, unfortunately.

Anyone here will tell you that you can get a lemon from any brand and price point.
>>
>>65061841
what? Are you saying my guitar was picking up the electrical currents running through my body, and touching the strings kills these frequencies?
>>
>>65061841
You're a tard. He's right. If you use an extention cord or something without a ground for your amp it wil usuallyl buzz, and when you touch it like other anon said the buzz goes away. How would the amp be grounding you then? It wouldn't.
>>
>>65061903
>How would the amp be grounding you then?
Should have eaten those broccolis fuckface
>>
>>65061895
Yes, we generate emr through some bodily processes. Creating a ground reference seems to quite us down to a manageable level.
>>
>>65061895
Yeah, that's what he's saying. But don't listen to him. Your body does generate some kind of electricity, but the noise isn't from you. It's from the outlet it's plugged into. You know the amount that can power your house. Not the insignificant amount from you. Otherwise every piece of audio equipment anyone everywhere ever goes near will buzz unless they touch it.
>>
>>65061939
>broccolis
Bed no dessert...
>>
>>65061868
Neck whip? No, my guitar stays in tune just fine. The only problem I've had with it is breaking strings. When I bend the high e string up to a whole step, it has a tendency to break. I've broken it three times in six months. I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm planning on asking an older, professional guitarist about it and go from there.
>>
>>65061903
>earth ground is only ground
there are different ways to go about grounding and baiting
>>
>>65062015
where does it break?

i had a guitar where the high e would always break at the bridge, i sanded the bridge so it was less sharp and boom, haven't broken a string since
>>
>>65061568
Yes.
With the speakers you have now it's impossible.
The best you can do is what you're already doing-run two speakers at a time.

Your Crate cab has 8 ohm speakers in it and they're wired in parrallel pairs, creating two 4-ohm banks of speakers.

If you connect those two banks in parallel, you'll have an impedance of 2 ohms.
If you connected them in series-parallel like in my picture, you'd have an impedance of 8 ohms.

To get a 4x12 cabinet with a total impedance of 4 ohms you'll need to change the impedance of your speakers. Either 4 speakers of 16 ohms wired in parallel, or 4 speakers with a 4-ohm impedance wired in series-parallel.
Since 4 ohm speakers aren't common at all, your best best is with 16 ohm speakers, as found in almost every Marshall cab in existence. The plain old Marshall 1960 cab has a 16/4 ohm selector switch so you could run your amp through that if you wished and it would work just fine.
>>
>>65061983
Every piece of audio equipment doesn't receive signal from high impedance pickups and a long cable.
>>
>>65062060
I'm only able to run one speaker at a time.
>>
Refinishing an old guitar.

What grit sandpaper should I finish with before starting the painting process?
About to go at the old finish with 150.
>>
>>65062029
What? Where do you think it goes? It's all trying to get to the ground. All of the ground wires to your house are attached to a pipe driven like 5 feet into the ground. There's 2 fat black hot wires wrapped with bare neutral aluminum wires going to a house off the pole. The ground is attached to the breaker box to get all of that static/interference shit out.
>>
>>65062048
Breaks in the middle. I'm bending at the 8th - 12th and picking right over the center pickup and it breaks somewhere between the two, probably at the pick.
>>
>>65062076
Put the buzzing guitar on the stand and walk away. Does the buzzing go away? No. Then it's not you.
>>
>>65062090
It's only a 2 speaker cab? My bad-I didn't notice that detail.
Either way, the math still doesn't work for you. Wire the 2 speakers in parallel and you get 2 ohms; wire them in series and the impedance becomes 8 ohms.

I actually have an old Ampeg stereo 2x12 cab that's done the same way except the speakers are 8 ohms each, which is A LOT more compatible with most amps.
>>
>>65062193
The farther i get the quieter it gets. Could it be because the amp is farther away?

hey guys, trying to learn my jazz chords - but is there a good place to find 7th chords charts? Not talking minor or major 7ths - just 7ths
>>
>>65062210
Yeah it's 2 4ohm speakers with 2 seperate inputs, one for each speaker. no mono switch. I guess I'm just gonna keep using only the left speaker, then. It's really loud, I can only turn up to 3 in my house. I hope there aren't any problems when I take this to practice. The shop who traded it to me will probably just swap me again if I can't keep this one.
>>
>>65062285

>>
>>65062306
yeah, but I've got some 7th chords on these standards that are bugging me.

Like Gb7, how the hell do I do that?
>>
>>65062285
If it's "just a 7th", it's a minor 7th.
I don't know why that is, but it is that way.
Major 7ths are their own thing, and are specifically noted as such.

I was going to say, then why would there be a notation difference between G-7 and G7?
>>

To clarify, the 7th referred to in a 7 chord (like an A7) is the minor 7th. There is no minor 3rd in the chord.
>>

G-7
G7

Both include minor sevenths, but th G-7 has a minor 3rd, while G7 has a major 3rd
