Love Hot Rats, but it's not one of my favourites. I honestly love all of his albums in some way or another.

I had a phase where I listened to nothing but Zappa, only albums i didn't listen to were Man From Utopia, Thing-Fish, Reuben and the Jets, and his synclavier stuff (which I need to revisit)

>The record that made me hate Frank Zappa
>Frank Zappa – Thing-Fish (1984)
I> have a healthy resentment for him. He had a great, acid sense of humour, but this guy, with all his technique and ability, never did anything that made me want to love music. I think he trained himself in his expertise to spite his parents; he had contempt for the rock music he played. And self-contempt. Fear, loathing and self-hatred. Thing-Fish just postured at nihilism.

Thanks, John. Continuing Lou's legacy.

Frank Zappa is lame, stupid, annoying fedoracore.

It's for 13 year olds that want to be wacky and different but are too dumb to do it in any interesting way (probably because they're 13) so they just opt for pseudo edgy bullshit that's "offensive" to some nebulous force, AKA no one in particular. In the end it just comes off as gross and tacky.

I can't get over the song "Goblin Girl", it is so gross and stupid I can't wrap my head around how anyone would think it's a good idea to make that song.

Those are my "thoughts" on this talentless fedoralord. I don't expect a rebuttal because his fans are idiots.

I had a hard time getting into Zappa for years because I was recommended Hot Rats, Freak Out, and Overnite Sensation.

Weasels Ate My Flesh and Uncle Meat were a little better... but I was never blown away.
I finally heard Joe's Garage and I realized, actually Zappa got a lot better after all those albums. It's way more experimental actually, if you know anything about classical music. The attribution of "genius" really starts to mean something with Joe's Garage, whereas with the other albums it seemed more just really good. I might need to re-evaluate everything he did now though.

It pretty much renders Mr. Bungle obsolete.
>>
>>64793898
Why is the album called Hot Rats?

Why is the album cover him peeking over the edge of an empty swimming pool?

>it has a very clear structure and consistently developed musical ideas all the way through
Which would be what?

There's a complete lack of flow and whatever it's trying to get across it fails at. It's music" is the only way I can describe it. I think it's supposed to be fun to listen to but it drags on until it's ear-bleedingly dry and it has absolutely no business being 9 minutes, everything it accomplished could have been gotten across in 30 seconds.

It's just bad.
>>
>>64793034
What a twat. I love Cale but if you can't appreciate "Catholic Girls" then you need to get your fucking head checked. IMO. The humor might be a turn off, I don't know. Either way it's an astounding piece of music and there are lots lots more just like it. Maybe Cale was just too stupid to hear it.

The guy could compose like a motherfucker, >>64793625 may be right in a way because half his audience is 14-15-year-olds who like zappa because he's "so random and weird and unique!!1!" (which is how I was when I started getting into him), but the other half is people who study music and see where the real talent is, not just from a composer's standpoint but also from a guitar player's.

He's my favourite guitarist and always will be, I've always enjoyed his music but never really "got it" until I started studying music.

Completely irrelevant when talking about the music in the album

you make it sound like the song changes drastically for no reason which is absolutely not true, everything you hear in the song it's based on the same chords

It's ok if you dislike Zappa's music, but don't make up retarded unfounded justifications like calling his instrumental pieces "random bullshit" when he was clearly a very talented composer

>Completely irrelevant when talking about the music in the album
The music is like that too.

The idea is that it's different for the sake of being different. There's no purpose.

>you make it sound like the song changes drastically for no reason which is absolutely not true, everything you hear in the song it's based on the same chords
Sure, but it doesn't sound like it's trying to accomplish anything.

The music basically just poofs into existence, goes on for 9 minutes with tasteless highs and lows that don't know why they're there and then it ends as quickly as it came.
>>
>>64795108
They're both butt ugly
>>
>>64795108

>>
>>64795400
The whole purpose of pretty much all of Zappa's recorded output was to mix what was considered "high culture" and "low culture" music at the time. The way he intended to do this was by taking cues from rock, jazz and 20th century classical; the most obvious example being the Lumpy Gravy album.

There you go faggot, now stop calling his music purposeless, because it obviously isn't to anyone who's actually paying attention.

>implying you wouldn't huff her farts if given half the chance

I can't help but feel this discussion would be better if it wasn't overemotional, filled with the use of the word "faggot" and seemingly for the purpose of beating one another into the ground and being "right"

My argument is that it's a bunch of half baked concepts loosely held together by music that sounds like he had a severe case of writer's block and it's a job that he just wanted to be done with.

and you also say
>>64794024

>weird and edgy for the edge of being weird and edgy

>>64795880
>Mixing "low brow" and "high brow"
wow holy shit guess what, doing something like that with music at the time was actually considered pretty revolutionary, don't cha know, it's a statement on the perceived elitism of the academic music community at the time, Zappa's music is his way of saying that there's no such thing as "high" or "low" music, and that's a pretty clear and strong artistic statement. You've said plenty more stupid inane shit but I think I got my point across
>>
>>64796258

The poorly executed part is debatable, but calling it shallow just shows how uninformed you are
>>
>>64796265
I think I downloaded those and they still had vocals. I also hate that it's mostly just guitar solos, but I guess that's as good as you're gonna get with Zappa/
>>
>>64796441
Frank Zappa was one of the pioneers of jazz-fusion you dolt he has plenty of instrumentals.
>>
>>64796317
>How about we drop talk of "concepts", these are instrumentals we're talking about. Why don't you explain, musically speaking, why his music is bad
Imagine a movie.

Shia Lebeouf springs out of bed and sings an angry screamo cover of All Star by Smash Mouth in Italian, hits himself in the head with a hammer and suffers a concussion. He wakes up 8 months later with amnesia and sets out on a quest to kill el chapo. In the process he discovers the true meaning of christmas. 40 minutes in the movie cuts to black.

Explain what's wrong with that movie. The answer is everything, you don't know where to begin explaining what's wrong with what you just saw. You only understand that it was a film of some kind.

That's Frank Zappa's music in a nutshell.
>>
>>64796441
Plus there's plenty of songs/albums where he doesn't sing but other band members do

Is it just the lyrics you dislike or the sound of his voice too?
>>
>>64796498
>>
>>64796498

>>
Zappa is a mixed bag. I'm not going to lie. The comedy isn't always something I want, and sometimes he does too much "fuddly duddly" xylophone randomness.

Also, sometimes there is too much jamming.

That said, if you see past those things, or if you come to enjoy them (because they are somewhat enjoyable at times) you will see there is a lot there.

I say embrace the comedy elements if you want to get into Zappa. You're not going to be able to unless you at least open your mind to them.
>>
>>64796498
You could have just said "I don't know how to properly criticize music", and closed 4chan
>>
>>64796324
>doing something like that with music at the time was actually considered pretty revolutionary,
10000 years ago a bunch of cavemen banging rocks together was considered "revolutionary", that doesn't make it good

>it's a statement on the perceived elitism of the academic music community at the time
So edgy in light of conformism and "the man"

Wow so cutting edge. If that was forward thinking for the time it aged like sour milk because that's absolutely groanworthy.
>>
>>64796498
This post just shows that you have no idea what you're talking about, the changes within the same song are nowhere as drastic as you make them out to be, it's all still based in the same chord progression and the way the song evolves is firmly rooted in jazz tradition but with an added rock flair due to the instrumentation and the way some of the solos sound
>>
>>64796559
Good job completely missing the point

So all unconventional ideas are edgy to you? All of Punk Rock is edgy? All Slave Work Songs are edgy? I mean, they tried to fight "the man", how edgy is that?

Seriously, fuck off with the "edge" meme, you've been using it all thread
>>
>>64796592
So just 9 minutes of an italian screamo cover of All Star then

>no you don't get it italian screamo was really offensive to people 40 years ago

Offensive doesn't make it good, fedora
>>
>>64796683
Then you just proved yourself wrong, because my point this whole time was that Zappa's music is not random bullshit, I don't know why keep harping on it being offensive or whatever, that has no bearing on the actual quality of the music
>>
>>64796683
You should give up. Your post don't even make sense anymore, man. Just know when to concede.
>>
>>64796648
The premise of the edgy insult is that it's edgy for the sake of being edgy. And it is.
>>
>>64796740
Make some kind of logical argument and I'll make a counter argument. Otherwise you can keep slinging shit at me and I'll keep slinging it back
>>
>>64796743
>it's edgy for the sake of being edgy
Look dude there are already several posts in this thread proving that statement wrong, either come up with a new argument or stop shitposting

I get that you don't like it or whatever and that's cool

But did you honestly have to ruin the entire fucking thread? I'm honestly bummed out

thanks
>>
>>64796872
yeah i didn't mean to use "honestly" twice

if you aren't a completely irredeemable faggot you wont use that against me
>>
>>64796872
I ruined nothing, that's the Zappa fans' fault. All I did was not have their opinion.
>>
>>64796895
it's alright anon, you were just being honest
>>
>>64796968
Hey man people in this thread have already proved to you that good ol' Frank's music is not fedoracore, feel free to go shitpost somewhere else
>>
>>64796968
Obviously if you come into a zappa thread and take a dump on him, people are going to defend

you could have just stated your opinion for the record, offered a few respectful rebuttals and dipped. Instead you chose to stay here and spew nonsensical and utterly subjective meme diarrhea for the entire duration

don't tell me you didn't buttfuck this thread
>>
>>64797027
Tippity top m8

>>64797044
Whatever there's still no siduation where it's less stimulating than these threads usually go. I'm not going to not share my opinion on a public imageboard.

>you could have just stated your opinion for the record, offered a few respectful rebuttals and dipped.

I never told you not to share your opinion

I told you not to be a dong mongler about it
>>
>>64797167
Easily the best solo he ever laid to tape
>>
>>64797183
Yeah you're completely right.

I only even vaguely support most of the things I've said.

I have literal autism. That's relevant partly in the fact that I don't really understand weird stylized things and the fact that I love arguing. I love arguing so much that I invent things to argue about.

I have no friends, this is basically what I do for entertainment.

Sorry for being a "dong mongler"... Frank Zappa seems like a cool guy
>>
>>64797338
weirdo
>>
>>64797338
it's alright mane, we all go ape shit and show our power levels sometimes

just try and keep it in designated shitposting threads, zappa threads are too uncommon for this

wrong board m8... I'm sure the humble people of /retarded/ would love to listen

What's the best Zappa album to sit around listening to while smoking weed wasting muh life till probably 5am?
>>
>>64798069
joe's garage by far
>>
>>64793625
Please ignore this bait and don't let this thread die.
>>
>>64798193
Trusting you with this one anon, also why is he a nigger on the album cover
>>
>>64792570
So much 12 year old trying to be le edgy contrarian by saying that his music suck without coming with any form of argument
>>
>>64793081
That flowchart kind of sucks. How hard would it have been to lump Sheik Yerbouti in with the rest of the comedy rock? How hard would it have been to connect Roxy & Elsewhere with the albums that came right before and right after it?
>>
>>64798693
Probably because a black guy plays the main character and sings for most of the album. Fun Fact: That cover was one of the original ideas for the Lather album artwork.
>>
>>64794812
Zappa is my favorite and this made me laugh

Why is he dressed like an Arab?
>>
>>64799518

let's hear it
>>
>hey joe, who did you blow?
>moe pushed the button boy, and you went to the show
>just suck a little harder, or the shekels won't flow
>and I don't mean your thumb
lmao
>>
>>64799858
The album is called Sheik Yerbouti.
>The title is a play on words; Zappa appears on the cover in character in Arab headdress, and the name, meant to resemble an Arabic transcription, is pronounced like the title of KC and the Sunshine Band's 1976 disco hit "Shake Your Booty".
>>
>>64800420
"Jewish Princess", a humorous look at Jewish stereotyping, attracted attention from the Anti-Defamation League, to which Zappa denied an apology, arguing: "Unlike the unicorn, such creatures do exist—and deserve to be 'commemorated' with their own special opus".[4]

Alrighty then, its not that exciting just a little cringey
> Be me
> Landed a pretty good job working for an engineer making up models of his shit on a computer
> Working in office alone
> Decide to play some music - put on just another band from LA
> Boss walks is with his son
> Ohfuck
> Not sure whether to turn music off as it would mean getting up and walking across the room
> Decide to weather the storm
> Begins talking to me about work shit
> Song gets to the bit around 6 mins in where Billy says 'WANNA EAT SOME CLAMS?' and the ringing alarm noises begin
> Boss gives me a disgusted look
> Can see them both cringing, neither of them think its funny
> Musics up really loud, can barely hear what hes saying
> Really awkwardly try to act cool with the situation
> Boss and son eventually leave
> Go to work next day and the speakers have been removed
>>
>>64800513
>Be me
fuck off
>>
>>64794988

Apostrophe is the only Zappa album I ever got half into and Nanook Rubs It is the only Zappa track I still listen to from it, the second half of that track is awesome
