rock was killed by electronic and hip hop on one side, by a move into soundscapes and textures on another (MBV, Sonic Youth, post-rock, noise, Radiohead, etc), and, finally, through the last massively popular Rock genre (which Thurston helped promote to prominence and which was alt-rock/punk coming to the fore), Grunge, rapidly becoming a farce in the Alternative Boom and its laughable decline
