Can someone explain the appeal of Weezer? I've listened to 3 of their albums and it's all just ok, like safe radio alt rock. I don't get why they have such a following.

Fun power pop with grungy guitars and 80's hair metal inspired solos. Their first two albums have pretty good lyrics, Pinkerton's are rea;;y cringy, but in a good way.
After Pinkerton flopped they started to move towards the over the top pop-rock sound they're known for. They're okay albums, some with really great moments, but nowhere close to their first two albums imo. Their two newest albums are pretty good tho.

The Blue Album is like the apex of poppy suburbancore though, the formula distilled at the meeting point of emo/pop-punk/alternative/indie/surf. I can't think of anyone who more perfectly captured the suburbs of that time.

I don't mean to sound like a douche, but you had to be there when they first emerged. They were so different at the time than what had been mainstream at that point. They were nerdy with this high energy power pop. A lot of people connected with that, because before then it wasn't cool to be a nerd.

it's not about the fanbase, but about the general concept of it becoming passe and outmoded. Weezer makes no sense in the dystopian cyberpunk future of 2016. trends are cyclical. If we are lucky, we'll live to see post-apocalyptic bards who ape the californian pop-punk stylings of Weezer and early Blink-182 with a sense of wistful nostalgia.
