If you've had a best friend or a lover who's died to cancer, possibly. I know Hospice personally fucked me up inside when I first listened to it a few years after my close friend passed away from leukemia.

Dying of cancer is a metaphor for crippling emotional and behavioral issues in his lover due to a fucked up childhood. Him being a hospice worker for her is a metaphor for him being utterly sympathetic and understanding of her psychological problems to the point where he can excuse and look past them even as they take their toll on him and his life. Her death is their breakup where she just disappears with no warning like she constantly threatens to do.
I hope you at least got that Bear was about an unwanted pregnancy and abortion.

Honestly? Most stories about romance, or the lack thereof, are a bit stale to me. Silberman did a good job with it, but that doesn't stop it from being a breakup album. Granted, I don't know many sadder but I'm too depressed to listen to music.

Really? To me it seems kinda comfy despite the lyrics. It feels like sitting around a campfire on a cold night with a woolen blanket. And sometimes the blanket catches fire but you always extinguish it right before it becomes a problem and before any major damage is done to the blanket.
