Daydreaming is excellent and would get a lot of love if it was on someone else's record, OPN, Tim Hecker, James Ferraro etc etc. This seems like it's a really weird time to be a really big band. Plus the bar is set so high for Radiohead, they like exist on this different plane of judgment from anyone else. Super fans love everything they do and sometimes Radiohead is shit on unfairly because of those super fans. Some of those fans are annoying and pretentious as hell but Radiohead themselves are not pretentious. It's not their fault that they occupy this space. I think the more you listen to music the more you are able to differentiate between different songs and different styles. Since you learn to pay more attention to details. Things gets more and more dissimilar, because you hear more elements of the songs that you can use to compare. For example I honestly don't hear much similarity.

I disagree about it being a regression. Daydreaming sounds like a dreamier IR while Burn The Witch sounds like HTTT with richer instrumentation. I don't think TKOL was much of a progression myself because that album is basically more straightforward krautrock worship than usual for them.

its not just the sudden key change, the song to me sounds like something you'd hear right before you die or having your life flash before your eyes. it reminds me of films like vanilla sky, which featured a song from kid a
idk i just love this sorta melancholy song and it coming from a pop group like radiohead drives the point home all the more. i like the backwards vocals buried in the mix and the ending of him sounding like hes speaking tongues. the song has a very religious feeling to it, and the lyrics make reference to "serving you" as in 'serving god', i just think so because in the song paranoid android, the title refers this phrase coming from hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy
you probably know that song's name is coming from Marvin The Paranoid Android, who is a character in this book. in story, Marvin (paranoid android) is the first robot that is created by a Sirius Cybernetics Corporation. And marvin hates this Corporation, because they created him. And; in Guide, this Corporation is defined as "a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes". so, in my opininon, thom yorke speaks to God when he says "when i am king you will be first against the wall, with your opinion which is of no consequence at all".

Good post, actually. In general people saying "if Coldplay released this it would be thought of this way..." can be equated to saying the same thing about it being on a Tim Hecker record, for example. Either way they are vapid comparisons and aren't actually bothering to critically look at the song. Not that it needs to be looked at with such a critical eye, but with Radiohead it seems that they are expected to constantly innovate, to reinvent themselves, to change the game, to make Important Music. Both of these songs are gorgeous and are employing melodies that seem a little bit different in comparison to the melodies they usually use. More sounds are being explored and it's being reduced to "lol Coldplay because piano." This is also assuming that merely sounding like Coldplay is an awful thing, and ignoring that the actual song is clearly grounded in Radiohead's past and doesn't relate to Coldplay in any way.
