The productions is amazing, but aside from the two tracks, Hopelessness and Bring me to Earth (or whatever it's called) the lyrics are so cringeworthy that they ruin the album.

I enjoyed almost all of her past albums, but fuck this. It's like trying so hard to be politically edgy that it's just pure cringe material.

No dip she has a deep voice for a female because she used to be a dude. I was responding to someone who said she sounded like a black man with a deep voice, which she most certainly does not. If she was a black man and that was her voice it would be considered high pitched lol

She has a deep voice for a female because she IS a dude kek. And the fact that someone thought it was a black guy TRYING to sound feminine is indicative of the fact that it sounds unnatural and phony.

I don't disagree with you at all other than you consider her a dude and I consider her a girl. All I was doing was pointing out that the person who said she sounded like a black dude is probably retarded. I personally don't really think it sounds unnatural at all, but that might just be bc I've been listening to her since before she was out as trans. Back then she was just a dude who sang in a high pitch voice, like Shamir or James Blake at times. She didn't change her voice at all over the years from what I can tell

I love seeing this idea of an agenda being pushed. Hateful 4chan dwellers think that pushing for rights for anyone is some sort of conspiracy to genocide white men, from BLM, to trans issues, to womens rights.

Look, I'm not going to convince you to change your views. I know you want to hate trans people. Go ahead. But I just find it funny that the wide range of places where I find music opinions, from my friends, to critical reviews, to general comsumers, enjoy this album, yet a website associated with bigotry doesn't.

You're calling fans of this uneducated. I'd like to see how you can spin people enjoying contemporary political themes and fantastically produced music as uneducated. Sure, there might be some bandwagon fans, but this spurious claim just doesn't make sense and seems to only be deployed as a method of maintaining some sort of perceived authority on the manner.

>>
>>64629986
>fantastically produced music

Could literally be made over the weekend with not much effort. It doesn't require much in the way of actual musical skill to put a release like that together. The lyrics are also painfully easy to come up with.
>>
>>64629914
By lived experience I mean that due to the majority of this website being young suburban white guys, or at least the overwhelming vocal minority, then the chances that you have engaged with trans issues, race issues, or anything else is minimal.

I'm not saying being trans is harder than being a manual labourer in every case, but being trans has a specific set of difficulties within society that are generalised and observable through historical research of the law, of sociology, of politics and literature, et al.

Again, being transgender brings with it a whole set of specific difficultes, much like being black, or being gay, or being a woman, and yes, like being a young white male. History, philosophy and sociology map these differences to try and understand how society operates.

My accusation of the majority of 4chan being suburban well-off dudes is based on my assumption that you do not come into direct contact with these issues in your life. I've never properly understood the intense hatred for marginalised groups that is fostered on this site, except to try and see that the userbase here doesn't really understand whats going on, and instead, reacts virulently against it.

Again, i'm sure you're whatever you say you are, and you have a bajillion trans friends or whatever you'll say to invalidate my claims. But at the end of the day, you're the one getting angry that one trans person has a well-received album.

>>
>>64629986
I don't quite agree with the anon you're responding to about the idea that it's propaganda; however, there is a most certainly a heavy amount of sanctimonious groupthinking that is occurring in journalism today -- especially when it concerns these trendy social topics.

And the fact that you bring up BLM and Women's rights, when these things are relatively unrelated is indicative of the fact that you just want to lump anyone who criticizes these subjects in much the same way as the bigots that you're always in search of.

As far as the quality of the record, it's obviously subjective, but as far as I'm concerned, the lyrics are nauseatingly sentimental and callow, and the production is fairly innocuous.

And for future reference, if the only thing you're going to respond to a statement with, is essentially "you're a hateful bigot", you end up looking kinda stupid.

I don't think anyone can deny that the general 4chan user is opposed to BLM, trans and womens rights in much the same way. Yes this is a generalization, but being honest with your use of the website, that it the case.

And yes, I would agree there is an uncritical groupthink associated with liberation politics - this is acted out by teenagers and unengaged people on social media, the prime example being the much maligned tumblrina.

But whilst 4chan is a group of individuals, it collectively shares the same uncritical vitriol and bile towards women, lgbt people and ethnic minorites. All of these are liberation issues and conversations usually tend towards that way.

Yeah, I didn't do the best at getting my point across, but it's never going to be well recieved here, so I didn't put in much effort. I'm happy to talk about this in more depth.

>>
>>64630460
>I don't think anyone can deny that the general 4chan user is opposed to BLM, trans and womens rights in much the same way
Sure, and there is plenty to criticize. The problem is that many individuals are more concerned with posturing than addressing things on a point for point basis -- and that goes for both sides.

Whether you're calling someone an SJW or "shill" or bigot or homophobe or whatever other kind of made-up phobia people use, these are not arguments and they carry absolutely no weight whatsoever; they only serve to derail any attempt at having a productive discussion.
>>
>>64629986
it's not white genocide, you retard. it's called marketing

>>
>>64625190
So here's the deal: I love OPN, I love Antony's duets with Björk, I love the piano/vocal version of OPN's "Returnal", and haven't really heard enough And The Johnsons' output to have anything but a neutral opinion.

That said, I only made it three tracks into this album before losing interest. I'd like to give it another shot sometime because I'm down with the idea of these artists collaborating and have enjoyed their output in the past, but lyrically this is just some of the most on-the-nose, didactic, preachy music I've heard in a while.

I don't even necessarily disagree with the politics behind the lyrics...but there's conveying a message; and there's conveying a message artfully, tactfully, with subtlety (or even just with enough style), and this feels like none of those to me. Yes, mass surveillance is bad. No, "Watch Me" is not a compelling or substantial expression of that fact.

I also take no issue with Antony's status as transgender nor with her preferred pronouns, but I also can't shake the feeling that the glowing reviews are something of an olive branch to that end. Music this painfully didactic is almost always critically derided and I can't help but feel like there's a double standard at work.

It sucks, because I actively want to hear more OPN & Antony collaborations, but I also actively don't want to listen to a track literally titled "Obama".
