This is terrible advice. Sidechaining is perfectly fine when it's used correctly. Your mix just sounds off because you have conflicting frequencies and unnecessary frequencies. At 0:41 when that synth comes in it turns an ok song unlistenable. Brash, abrasive hi's flood the mix in a way they shouldn't. I like the energy behind the project, but it lacks in structure, the drums are pretty bad (snare is atrocious), your bass has no bass, and the white noise and sweeps are absolutely toxic.

In summary, you have something good and with a little more effort something very good. Keep messing around with layers and EQ to make the mix more desirable.

>>64609987 Fm7 from native instruments does the trick pretty well. I used to screw around with my Mk1 many years ago and they were perfectly syncronized via midi with all the banks and sounds cross transferable.

>>64610533
How is that snare "atrocious"? It's nothing special, but it goes nicely with the song

And as for that synth, I think the problem is more with overuse of phasing fx / some stereo effect, and perhaps a touch too much mid range energy

obviously this track needs to be mastered properly too, everything needs to be compressed and touched up in some way I'm sure

post a picture of the project in your DAW if you want us to help you further

and yes that noise is pretty annoying, needs to be much more focused and subtle
>>
>>64609160
>>64610819

and also, sidechain the synth lead that comes in at :40 to your kick and snare a bit, it will allow the track to breathe a little more
>>
>>64610727

How is it now? https://clyp.it/2e0xp1ji

thanks for the advice(s). i like the snare a lot so i'm keeping it, and yeah i need to tighten everything up and *really* need to replace the noises (i just whipped them up quick while i was writing it).

Is the sync lead really that bad? I cut some highs so it's probably better now.

In the little steps between those anthem synths try out a more bass heavy synth fill, some modulation and automation on it. There's not that much low in this mix, at least that I could hear.

It's a bit better. Definitely tighter mix. I'm glad you at least are aware that the sounds need polishing. I would keep the underlying chords, they fit, but the lead still needs work. I almost feel like it should be another octave up it is less annoying now but it still just doesn't work.

I rarely even have to use sidechaining in my work and I still know this is retarded. You can alter the ghost signal to be anything, automate every little parameter of the compressor/limiter/gate in use, and still do those said microedits if you really feel the need.

Give me ONE good reason that you are anti-sidechain other than that people tend to overuse it.

One shouldn’t do that: music is the product of the highest human intelligence, and of the best senses, the listening senses and of imagination and intuition.

And as soon as it becomes just a means for ambiance, as we say, environment, or for being used for certain purposes, then music becomes a whore, and one should not allow that really; one should not serve any existing demands or in particular not commercial values. That would be terrible: that is selling out the music.

Alot of what people use sidechaing for can be done with Lowpass filter and ADSR. But people like Slugarbed and Samiyam used it in creative ways. Its like autotune it can be used as a fix or can be used as an effect.
You shouldnt be sidechaing cos you want your kick to be louder in my opinion.

I've been considering getting this to thrown on my master for live performance effects.

I know i could potentially just build my own macro effects chain in ableton and get a midi controller to specifically use for this, but the interface on the RMX 1000 just seems really user friendly and it comes with a VST version.

I built it all up one piece at a time. First I got the DR-40 for about $130 and used that alone for awhile. But then I got the mics and the set of omni capsules for them, so then I could build and use a Jecklin disk, which led to me getting the external preamps so i didn't have to use the noisy DR-40 preamps which meant i needed another phantom power supply, etc. All-up there's probably around $1000 there, which is incredibly cheap for the quality recordings I can get with it. But I save a lot of money making my own windmuffs, making the jecklin disk, the tripods were on clearance for $9 each, etc.

If I bought a super high quality recorder (instead of all the other separate components) it would have cost me 3x as much. I just have a bit more bulk to carry and setup but you do it for the dollarydoos

Here's an updated pic with my pack all packed

Seems okay if you're willing to spend the money. The interface is really good quality/value, unsure about the microphone and headphones but if you're a beginner, (i think) it's best to start with mid-quality stuff so that you know how to use your tools effectively.

>>64631744
I think it really depends on what youre making. Right now i'm making stuff where drums all go into one bus, but in the past i've made different busses for different parts, but usually will all go together at some point.

basically try different stuff, copy someone off a tutorial on youtube, etc.

Just listened to retrograde...

sounds like FM synthesis... 3-4 oscillators, all tuned with each other (maybe slightly detuned, but not supersaw level). Pitch envelope is added to make the first chords play at a much lower pitch and bend up to the true pitch of the notes.

similar patch was used on Moderat - Running, after the breakdown...

thanks! you are right, i should just try out different routing options and see what i like. i guess i'm just eager to establish something so i can build a Lemur template for a standard submix i'll always use... currently my submix is Drums/Bass/Rhythm/Vocals/Leads/Misc... i've liked it for mixing, but it doesn't jive well for live performance stuff...

Someone on here the other day said they separate their drums into multiple busses, and run all other music into one bus. I assume they just put that bus through a multiband comp?

I'll see if i can find some other options on youtube.

https://clyp.it/valbe1xn Been listening to a lot of lil yachty, and this is an ode to metro boomin called Metro Impresses Me

I know you're wrong because retrograde is basically all saws and subtractive, no FM. Not the guy asking btw, just happen to know this.
>>
>>64634468
yeah, meant subtractive

>multiple busses

Dave Pensado has a good example of how he does things on this Into The Lair episode;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ranVw1E7tb4

Summarized, he tends to use little bits of compression from multiple plugins on each instrument, busses them into groups and adds a little bit of glue compression there, then routes the groups to the stereo bus where there's another finalizing compressor waiting.

ok so fuck crying in a bathtub i made a little tune instead. not sure where to go with it which is my problem 99% of the time.

What do you guys think is the best source for samples and loop packs online? Just for anything and any genre like maybe drum one shots for instance. What have you had the best experience with?

shotgun mic. best for low prices would be a rode ntg2. they're not great microphones in comparrison to say, the sennheiser me66 etc etc.

Audio Technica shotgun mic isn't worth the money.

anyone know if this is a legit full free good download?

i know it's a sound gooderiser but i just want something to quickly chuck on a vocal track whilst they're tracking. CLA-76 would be done for final mix
>>
so this is a work in progress
i just want to know if the part in the middle contrasts well with the 1st and 3rd parts

ik the transitions are a bit rough
>>
>>64636295
splice is alright if you dont mind paying 5$ or whatever to download individual samples from commercial packs

i mostly use classic drummachine samples or try to design my own sounds

I don't know much music theory at the moment (I'm learning) but are there any specific things for helping to write acid jazz/nu-jazz/neo-soul/related stuff?

It can be good to learn some songs from the genres you like, either by ear or if you can find sheet music.

transitions could flow a bit better but this is pretty nice. everything sounds pretty damn great mixing wise, and i think the sections work nicely together

Alright m8s I'm fucking tired of putting off learning how to do all this shit.

not really mix related but at around 0:18 you have some elements that arent really in the same key - the bassline and guitar part don't really seem to complement eachother harmonically there.
>>64638667
sub seems a tiny bit loud also imo the middle part is more interesting than the other parts, i would just scrap the other stuff desu and expand on the middle part, maybe vary the percussion a little more too

https://clyp.it/qrsawtrw - something i'm working on right now. used 1/4" tape for the occasional pitch bend and tape saturation. snuck a little chrono trigger sample in (the organ) - it evolves into something a little more clubby than i usually do so i'm not really sure on that part, also don't really know where to develop it from here.

torrent FL Studio

>>64642530
this isn't really my style but i feel like some of your bassy sounds need to be tamed just a bit, might just be me though. also that hihat sample you have is kind of annoying
but this has a really nice groove to it. very fun track to listen to

>>64642654
damn i didn't notice that before. thanks
i like the pitch bending on your track a lot, wish i could fuck around with some tape stuff. sounds nice and warm. melodies are nice
>>
>>64642530
don't listen to a lot of music like this (kind of reminds me of playing hotline miami though) but something seems off in the rhythmic feel of that arp that comes in the middle, just seems kind of stilted and doesn't really groove nicely.. also the midrange synth part thats doubling the bass seems a little loud in the mix, especially around 1:20
>>
>>64642832

thanks! you can pick up a decent stereo tape deck for not a ton of money, multitracks can get really expensive though. i just use a teac a-2300 and sometimes bounce stuff to tape and back after ive mixed it in the box. as much as i love the sound, i also cant help but feeling i'm using it as a crutch kind of - like an instagram filter for audio or something. i wish i could produce and mix really really clean tracks in the box, but they never seem to have quite the same polish and depth compared to a lot of stuff i like to listen to.
>>
>>64642323
could I do it Garageband?
>>
>>64643116
garageband is pretty limited but you could. limitations arent always a bad thing though, sometimes they help the creative process for me. i would probably recommend ableton, pro tools, or logic though.
>>
>>64643194
Thanks breh

Do you rec any good links, so I can familiarize myself with said DAW?
>>
>>64643267
i dont have any in particular to recommend, but i know ableton has great tutorials built in and there's a ton of stuff on youtube. i'd recommend just dowloading a demo and diving in. it will be weird and confusing for a while but just keep on truckin.
>>
>>64643194
>limitations arent always a bad thing though
yea for me if i have too many choices i wont get anything done sometimes
>>
>>64609009
This is really impressive, if only for how fast he's able to get a nice melody going.
