What in your mind is the most absolute perfect song ever constructed. Not necessarily the one you listen to the most, or even like the most - but the one you think is a masterpiece.

I'm eager to listen to some suggestions.

I'd personally say Tool's Lateralus, I'm not a devotee of the band but I do think this song is incredible, lyrically and phonically.

Turangalila Symphony by Olivier Messiaen

DJ Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World

This song just hits all of the notes for me. It's beautiful but somber, and it's just so tightly and carefully constructed while still sounding like it was made in the moment. Class A song.

Starless by King Crimson

Listening but I'm not sure I would count a symphony as a song as such.

I'm a long time tool fan. i grew up with undertow and aenema.

it was interesting to see the follow up generation fall in love with lateralus so much.

it is certainly their most mature and complex and well thought out album. It is in a sense math rock - but they were able to deliver more than just complex rhythms

its my least favorite album tho of tool, the rawness of opiate and undertow i love and aenema is the peak of that end, there was definitely a change in sense with the addition of chancellor.

that said parabola and reflection are among my favorites

10,000 days had a lot of filler but in spots was amazing

This is the perfect combination of everything I've ever loved in pop music.

- gritty, strained, yearning vocals
- 12-string guitar
- "Heroes"-esque layering of guitars (no idea how many guitar tracks are present in total)
- pristine production
- idiosyncratic use of langue ("un" instead of "dis")
- still sounds like a band of punks in their garage, somehow

It's one of the best albums ever, not just a favorite. Listening to the whole album after being aware of the final song makes the remaining songs even better thanks to this "double feeling" thing. No other artist I know does that, this double feeling thing.

I dream about music. all the time. im always listening to music in my dreams. Often I dont remember the dreams, but I always remember how they made me feel, and how that beautiful, milk, sweet sweet music made me feel: in my dreams. This song takes me to a place in my dream land, a literal place within my subconscious, a feeling so ineffable there is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnb8XviYRoA

Well i think greatest is just like rating women, you can only really get 8/10s objectively and then the extra 2 are down to taste.

I think most people would objectively rate lateralus very high, short of contrarianism - but could list several others that are 9s and 10s for them.
