Thought's /mu/?
So I've only listened to Rain Dogs and a couple songs on youtube, I love his goofy weird shit like Singapore, Cemetery Polka, Gods away on Business, but absolutely cant stand songs like Downtown train, Hang down your head.
What albums by him are more out there and less "sitting in a bar being sad and old"?
I heard a song on x files and thought it was cool
Lesser version of Alice but still worthwhile

Swordfishtrombones, Frank's Wild Years and Bone Machine

Go listen to some Bruce Springsteen
He was good in that one film Wristcutters.

Blood money is probably my favorite of his albums. I love how it just reeks of greed and how coarse his vocal performance is while still having some real touching tunes like All the World Is Green as well as The Part You Throw Away. Plus the album ends with a flawless bitter sweet tone.

Yeah i feel like people end up being partial to either his early bluesy bar songs or his later whack shit. If you like his more whack stuff then id try out the album The Black Rider or Bone Machine.

Downtown Train sounds like a fucking Jackson Browne b-side
It's absolute drivel and Tom should be ashamed of himself for writing it
