I judge and shit talk people a lot based on what they listen to but I've listened to the same music I shit talked and liked the music.

I've been on /mu/ for like 4 or so years now.
I'm not even going to pretend like I didn't notice a shift in my emotional state, self esteem and social life, when I stopped listening to 90% of traditional /mu/ approved music.
I still enjoy it but most of the time I'm listening to hip hop or pop now, I feel like it's easier not be a fucking social outcast, without comprising what I enjoy. I still enjoy all the same music I used to but I enjoy happier music way more.
/MU/ is pretentious about music becuase it makes the other neet nerds feel superior and better about their pathetic lives.

I think it is, for once, actually autistic. For a typical person, liking some obscure artist with a friend makes that love deeper. It makes it more real somehow.

It make you easier to relate to people. I can't think of how many times I would hear people talking about pop or hip hop and just feel left out and when people would ask what I listened to, they couldn't relate.
People are drawn to others they can relate to and feel comfortable with.
Hip hop is a shit genre written by people who can't run a melody to save their life, have no understanding of theory and thinks "borrowing" elements of other people's work counts as their original production.

Are you me? I used to try so hard to be edgy and like depressing as fuck music like Elliot Smith or Swans. Now I really just listen to Jazz/ambient/feel good music by large. Mainly artists like Nujabes/Air/Aphex Twin/Beck etc. Although I still listen to quite a lot of slow core like Sun Kil moon and lo-fi like mountain goats.
