Thin picks + thick strings is legit. I run 11s and found that switching to thinner picks (from .75 to .50) solved a lot of my lower midrange issues. I can finally have sane EQ settings on my amp. This is with a set neck/mahogany body instrument - I doubt the situation would be similar on a tele. I still carry & use jazz IIIs but they're not my go to.

I love where Schecter places their knobs and switches. Nothing in the way of my picking hand.

I just bought a partscaster tele. I've been wanting to try a fatback neck and this came with a boat neck. It feels so hnnnnnnng. I'll still order the fatback in a couple of months to end my curiosity, but the boat neck might be the one for me.

I recommend thick necks to any other small handed bros out there.
>>
>>64566673
I've tried them, not a huge fan of that EHX organ tone they all share. Pretty fun using them in other ways beyond emulating. They are fun with the EHX Superego, and you should try it in the f/x loop of your delay.

They'll do it any time I want and I don't think I want yet so no need for me to jump on it. I might want a white or sunburst body in the future. You need a tele
>>
>>64569792
I use medium-heavies, .14 to .56, and a tortoise shell pick between 1.5mm and 2.0mm somewhere. Honestly, you won't get even semi-decent tone or volume audible over other instruments out of an unamplified acoustic guitar without at least medium strings and a 1mm pick. And if you aren't getting good tone unplugged, I guarantee no matter how good you think your plugged-in tone is, it is inferior to what it could be.
>>
>>64569917
I think most people know enough to know that if they see a Fender decal like that, it's a Warmoth or Mighty Mite neck. The placement really doesn't bother me, though. I got a bretty good deal on this beaut.

> Sonic, Daphne, Lake Placid, Agave or Ice Blue with a Tortoise Shell pick guard

> Dimarzios or SDs, I definitely prefer ceramic humbuckies though

> 12" neck radius since I got long spider fingers

> Preferably rosewood it maple is fine as long as their high quality.

This guy has been lowering the price by $100 every month. I bet if someone offered him $550 he'd take it.

>>
>>64570082
Warmoth. If you prefer ceramic I'm pretty sure dimarzio has better options. The super distortion is the classic ceramic humbucker.
>>

Oh I checked on the warmoth site, unless you want HSH routing you're going to have to go with a swimming pool route (its called something different on the site but you'll see it).

Which may or may not be to your liking.
>>
>>64570377
I'd actually prefer the swimming pool. Would it be possible to put 3 Humbuckers with the SPR? That sounds very appealing to me. I was the guy who sold an Ibanez JEM and I liked it but Id rather have a guitar that I've built and it's made for what I've wanted. Plus the Floyd rose was useless and a pain in the ass. The neck was nice though.

Yeah no problem, you can get an H H H pickguard from warmoth as well.

>>
>>64570449
not to be that guy but sx strats are 12". I doubt they are swimming pool route. I've seen a couple powder blue ones but a lot more surf green ones.

>but you need a tele because they sound fucking great. Nuff said.
I can get on board with that. Love the look and sound of teles.
>>

For some reason I always thought telecasters were ugly as sin, but I'll be damned if they don't have some of the sweetest, most downright life-enriching tone there ever was. If I had the money, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. With how they sound, they could look like a pile of shit sculpted in to shape for all I care.

I chose a bunch of options that cost extra. You can get away with 200 or so. Top routing would be slightly less, even.

still pretty damn expensive... I mean, you're gonna want a finish at some point. I dunno man, warmoth isn't the only horse in the race.

Update:
Been playing the Mel9 through an American Strat into a Super Reverb Reissue, found best results keeping my true guitar tone and the effect a touch quieter. Attack 2 o'clock, Sustain 10 o'clock.

See the organ tones didn't really interest me, but the mellotron is softer and more psychedelic. The pedal just came out 2 months ago to the public as far as I know.

Sounds like I have somebody dialled into a smooth lofi-fi synth sound playing alongside me. Getting really nice results playing my songs with this pedal.
>>
>>64571383
A clearcoat finish will only cost you around $400 total.
>>
>>64570932
Wonder why the tele routing is almost 50 extra per pickup. It's not as though they don't have the templates around.
>>
>>64571704
you don't need a U.S. made body. What's the point, other than patriotism? It's very easy to get the body right., cheapo bodies won't mess it up either.

>>
>>64566320
I finally understand floating thumb muting, and I see the advantages, but I think I'll stick to pattitucci-style for now or try to get good at both styles.
>>
>>64573141
I'm not really into sunburst, but I'm probably going for the strat, looks way less gimmicky. I can probably get it when I get my holiday bonus in June, 8% of all the money you made in the year before goes a long way.
>>
anyone into höfner basses here? i love it for all the reasons modern bassists hate them, the short scale, the light body, the small string spacing and of course the sound. i currently have a german-made violin bass, but i want to get a club bass, even if it's essentially the same instrument.
>>
>>64573294
You can get other light, short scale basses with small string spacing honestly. I find them ugly as sin and pretty uncomfortable to play with the thick body.
>>
>>64573294
I kind of like them but I have realized that the body is surprisingly irrelevant to the sound of those. I love the look though.
>>
>>64573319
i understand why a lot find them ugly, i'm generally into "ugly" instruments i suppose (even though they're beautiful to me). it's just a question about aesthetics of course. i actually prefer thicker basses myself, i find it much more comfortable to to rest my elbow while playing with my fingers.

>>64573332
yeah, i would argue that the body doesn't really have any relevance at all as far as sound is concerned for any bass (or electric guitar for that matter). it's all in the pickups. i would however argue that a hollow body makes a slight difference though (slightly thumpy).
>>
.. Don't sleep guys go post pictures of your strats or something
>>
>>64573294
It's the guitar players bass in terms of playability.

So much easier to switch between guitar and the höfners compared to other basses.
That being said, I'm not a fan of the violin bass look too much and don't find the sound as versatile as other basses.

guys need help
i found this crappy old 7 string acoustic guitar in my basement, and i wonder if i could put regular 6 strings on it and start learning to play regular acoustic or should i ditch it?
>>
>>64576001
That's some old weird ass russian thing - they had some different tuning on it.

You could put strings on it, but it doesn't look like it would be any fun to play.
>>
>>64575661
A lot of his tone comes from his playing style. Like a really aggressive flamenco or something.
>>
>>64576001
You just put a set of 7 strings, they're not hard to find now.
Assuming the guitar isn't fucked up now, the seventh string is either going to be an inconvenience, or will help you get more voicings and possibilities, it's up to you.

>>64576035
It could as well be a brazilian seven string, which were tuned to CEADGBE or BEADGBE
>>
>>64576001
You could but you'll have to adjust your technique a bit when you move on to 6 string
>>
>>64575865
Yeah I mainly use those myself, I also use 2.0 Ultex for rhythm stuff but the 0.73 is plenty hard enough.

>start learning to play regular acoustic

If you haven't played any guitar before, I would not recommend You to learn with 7 string guitar.
Having 7 strings means that You need to use different chord shapes.
If you put 6 strings to that, the space between them could be a problem. Also if You remove the bottom string it would still be harder to play than regular acoustic. If you take out the top string it may be ok, but the grooves on the nut in which the strings are would probably make some strings awkwardly high depending the string gauge.
Also If it has been on Your basement for long changes are it will play like shit without proper adjustment which will cost if You don't know how to do it Yourself.
I would recommend You to buy proper brand name used acoustic guitar from a store if You are serious about starting guitar playing.

that's what you think

he's new to guitar, he has no idea how to mute strings, he'll want to learn from tabs and sheets for 6 strings and will have to learn around that.

No need to make things needlessly complicated if it won't be useful to him.

Anyways, ignore the shitters dude and just buy a 6-string acoustic, or try out that one like the other anon said with just 6 strings on it.

Why is the Musicman stingray with 1 pickup so popular? iirc the version with 2 pickups doesn't have the serial/parallel option but it can still switch each pickup to single coil and you get way more tonal options with a neck pickups vs without one.

Honestly you get more tonal variety switching from series to parallel than bridge to neck if you figure in EQ. This is mostly because the bridge pickup is not that close to the bridge to begin with. I think that varies from bass to bass but to me the same pickup in two different places is mostly useful for the way they interact. So I would think the main advantages of a two pickup MM are both on in series and both on in single coil. Both on in series they don't interact a ton either, it should just be a tad muddier/smoother. I think it's gonna vary between bassists whether those positions are worth it. The downside being twice the expense in pickups, and aesthetics. The parallel thing could always be modded in though I guess.

Great album. Gira uses Orange Thunderverb 200's nowadays. If you crank your amp, put your guitar in drop D and chug some D minors you have the first bit of Bring The Sun just fyi.
Always wondered how they get the sound of early, Filth era Swans. Listening to Public Castration Is A Good Idea just shows how visceral they were back then.
>>64577321
Building one as in actually physically constructing the board, or as in just what to buy to get a good pedal board setup? If the former, I think there is an easy way to build a nice medium sized board out of the Ikea Gorm, just look it up. If the latter, just buy cool pedals, a pedal train, decent cables, and an isolated power supply.

>>64577501
You don't have to get a squire to get a cheap tele, man. Also, try a nashville style tele.

Also just pirate bias FX or use free plugins like the Anvil preamp and some impulse response.

This isn't true at all.

You can tell right out of the box that the CVs don't go through the same strict QC or construction as Fenders. Thats not to say they're not good guitars though.
But a MIM fender is still better.
>>
>>64577659

Are mexican fenders good these days? Would I be better off saving for one over a CV?
>>
>>64577742
They're pretty good.
If you ask me, I would say yes, it's maybe $200-400 more depending on where you live/buy from for the standard model. but it's up to you how you want to spend your money.
I personally like to save up until I can afford something great that I know I want, and won't have to upgrade later on, others like to build up.
>>
>>64577540
Meshuggah's tone is probably the most massive yet crushing thing I ever heard live. It is completely in your face and yet it's clear and tight. I wish I could have seen them for more than 15 minutes.
Otherwise I'm a simple man, a tubescreamer boosted amp or a Boss HM-2 can do the trick for me, you can get a really nice sound just by hitting your strings as hard as possible while palm muting.
>>
>>64577396

I thought that radius made chording easier, and small frets make sliding easier since they don't get in the way too much?
>>
>>64578026
smaller radius is easier for chords, isn't that great for leads

i can't think of any reason why anyone would like smaller frets over something like medium jumbos. smaller frets make everything more difficult. i guess the only reason someone would like smaller frets is if they have a gorilla grip and push down on the strings way too hard, with smaller frets you aren't going to really go sharp too much if you do that
>>
>>64578026
Yes and sort of

They are really nice for chords. They are not nice for shredding, and huge bends.

I like small frets because they feel nice to me, I don't think it really makes sliding any easier at all.
Most people don't like it again though because it means youll end up touching the fretboard with your fingers and you have to press a little harder.
So terrible guitars for metal/shred type stuff, great for a lot of other things.
>>
>>64578089
My old acoustic had like 1mm tall frets, playing it was a pain in the ass but apparently lots of old guitars used those.
>>
>>64578089
When people talk about frets they always just talk about one size. Big frets being both tall and wide and small ones being both short and thin. Is there any term for frets that are tall and thin? Cause I like those, big frets that aren't so wide and rounded are great imo.
>>
>>64577831
I dunno man, $200 is a lot more than the cost of a fret level. The way I see it any time there's a slight difference in playability it's a matter of fret work and setup. But then again, by that logic you could easily get a squier to play like a custom shop so I must be off my rocker.
>>
>>64578327
there's all types of fret size wire around, just look up fret size on google

>>
>>64577447
>Exept that's not necessarily a russian guitar,

Fail so hard
>>
>>64578409
Only russians made acoustic ERGs right.
>>
>>64578327
Tall thin frets are bad because nobody makes crowning files that fit them that well. Obviously you can use normal files but you have to be a lot more careful to keep the file level and what was previously a pretty fool proof step now requires a steady hand, more careful concentration, and to put it bluntly some measure of skill.

But yeah I think the design itself is superior. The width of a fret really does nothing for you at all and if people made fret files that fit them they'd be quicker to file.
>>
>>64578484
Wider frets last longer since there are more materials to wear against the strings, but aside from that not really.
>>
>>64576364
Open G tuning
the E string just gets in the way most of the time.

>>64576377
3 is probably more than a lot of bass players need
>>
>>64577540
The former, I'll look into the Gorm!
>>
>>64577283
Never saw it that way, I've tried a stingray and the switch from parallel to serial is not that huge IMO. Maybe it's a different concept to have one middle pickup and a good EQ vs 2 pickups, but HH + a good 3-band EQ just seems more versatile to me.
>>
>>64578706
I mostly use the 6th string on my bass a thumb rest
>>
>>64578684
well, sort of... Really the primary concern is only with the top of the fret, even a thin fret will be worn too flat before it gets dented. I think a wider fret would last longer if you're not taking good care of your frets, but if you're keeping both polished they should flatten at around the same speed. I guess it sort of depends on your standards, frets that are a bit flat won't kill you, and if your frets are getting flat by all means thinner frets will wear faster. But really you shouldn't let your frets get to that point.
>>
>>64578876
post your bass amigo
>>
>>64579261
Frets wear the more you play, there's nothing you can do to prevent that.
>>
>>64579302
polishing your frets will increase the time you can go between crowning, and more frequent crowning will increase the time between refrets. Polished frets have less friction and won't wear as quickly.
>>
>>64579748
>prevent fretwear by wearing off the frets
How about just play it normally and stop caring about little details? Even if you don't do shit they can still last you over a decade or more, and by then if you still like the guitar you can just give it a refret or a new neck.
>>
>>64579819
The reason frequent crowning will increase the lifespan is because flatter frets wear quicker due to more surface area. In other words, it's a vicious cycle. The roughness of the frets is the same way. To bring a half year's fret wear under control takes probably two strokes of 1000 grit sand paper and then either a super fine abrasive or straight to the wheel. In other words, removing so little material it would take thousands of times to wear the frets down.

You can just ignore your frets for a decade and then replace them, but after a year they'll start performing noticeably worse. I'm sure it depends on personal preference whether that annoys you or not.

Polishing your frets with paper or steel wool adds about 5 minutes to your string change and will make sure your frets never need to be leveled unless your neck warps.
>>

fretwire.jpg
27 KB, 624x482
you can polish and crown all you want, (well to a point), the quality of your fret wire will have the biggest impact on fret life.

the frets on my Epiphone are deeply rutted after about 8 years, while I have had my American Charvel about the same length of time, played it more, and it was old buy the time it got into my hands is only in need of some minor work on it's original frets.
unfortunately I cant afford to have either done
>>
I've never once polished or crowned my frets but I've also only played for a little over a year. How often should you polish/crown? Also with polish are we talking those fret rubbers I see around or is there something more to that? I've read a bit about crowning with files and I'm pretty sure I shouldn't need that for a while.
>>
>>64580061
When we talk about polishing, there are no files involved. Crowning is done to fix a noticeable flatness, and leveling is done to correct uneven frets. The time between all these things will depend on your frets and maintenance. Optimally you should polish twice a year as a rule of thumb. You can get away with pretty much anything though.

Radius is just like Tube/SS, Tunings, bridges, pickups, there's no best, there's only options people prefer.

I had a thought recently about something that could look nice. I've seen occasionally 3-ply black pickguards with black pickups on a strat for example, and I think it would look neat if you beveled the pickup routes similarly to the edge of the pickguard, to give the pickups a white outline. Just a thought, could look good. I couldn't find any pics online but I was only googling.

yup
It's a pain to clean a rosewood board once it's gotten dried out enough to let that shit into the grain. I recommend a toothbrush. It might be prudent to use a little grain filler once you actually get it clean.
>>
>>64580751
I guess it is really dry, when I first got it the board was grimy and dusty so I cleaned it out really well with a magic eraser (basically a very fine abrasive). I guess it got dry after that.

Well, once it's clean, oil it at least, though you can't really undo the damage as far as the grain opening up. I've heard of people sanding down instead of using grain filler but that seems more difficult to me. Honestly oiling it will probably be enough to keep it from cracking, the rest of the stuff is pretty much just for appearances. Though having a smooth fretboard is also a bit nicer feeling if you have small frets.

Been out of the guitar scene for about a decade, but I thought those were the guitars poor kids had in HS.

Yamaha is great at everything they make. Just because poor people play them doesn't mean they're shit.

Leo used shitty trees that were practically in his backyard and whatever cheap automotive paint he could find to make his instruments. I'm sure you'll do just fine with some nip gear.

That's probably what it is. Just scrub it out with a damp toothbrush

I just want to be in a band where randomly screaming into the mic is acceptable
is that too much to ask?

Well, i just got my first pedal few days ago. the Context Reverb by Red Panda.

I spent many many days listening to alot of different pedals, and from all the reverbs i heard, this one was my favorite one. i wanted it for months so im very happy i finally got it

A little surprise was that it has about the same color as my guitar... it looks black or some form of blue-gray in some pictures but its actually dark blue with sparkles.

(the picture is just a picture of the pedal from google btw, i did not take a photo of my own pedal)

honestly in my area only cover bands get gigs, I think I'm gonna move... What's a nice place for a musician to find gigs?

I've been learning guitar for the last few months, and today decided to master tremolo picking today.
I spent several hours learning how to play a lot of black metal riffs and songs.

Now my hands, arms and fingers are uncontrollably shaking, a good handful of my picks are eroded beyond re-use and I've also cut and torn off a fair bit of skin from my right hand from accidentally hitting the strings.

Are these the normal effects I should look forward to from playing metal or do I just need to git gud?

both

I wish Gibson made SGs with vibratos like they used to.
>>
>>64582595
this has nothing to do with metal
If anything metal generally is easier on the right hand because you're playing with high gain and usually playing gently.

The sideways ones or the bigsbys? Both were pretty shit designs senpai

As a bass player I never understood spending big bucks on reverb. What is so good about something like that compared to an amps built in spring verb or digital reverb or something similar.

Could happen.

The only guarantee is to carry your guitar in a soft gig bag as your carry-on luggage. I have done that twice with zero issues.

honestly reverb isn't even a good effect, just "fills out" a song without adding anything of value. You get some atmosphere but guitarists who leave that on are cancer. You're taking valuable space and throwing it away.
