At least Elton John was a respectable artist once upon a time. Duran Duran have no cred, no respect, nothing. They were nobody when they were somebody.
>>64559929
Can think of a more perfect album for this thread.
>>64559976
idk Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf are GOAT pop rock songs
I think Elton John's music is still pretty good. I appreciate soft rock though, unlike many friendly /mu/ hipsters.

TLC are releasing an album this year kek
I can't associate them with anything other than that 90's sound

>>64560110
Duran Duran sucks balls for the most part.
>>64560097
As much as I love pink floyd this should never have seen the light of day
>>64560179
I disagree. Richard Wright's final recordings are worth it.
>>64560211
It has some good melodies, and the last few songs are nice. It's pretty much just That Lucky Old Sun but with the Beach Boys and no spoken word interludes.
>>64560161
This isn't even their most recent album lol
Though Dystopia was a lot better than this piece of shit
>>64560211
It's actually good, but still fits the category
>>64559742
I liked this actually, had some p decent tracks on it. Definitely not as good as their 80s & 90s stuff though
I'm glad the Rolling Stones quit releasing new albums after ABB instead of embarrass themselves further.

A lot of these albums are just advertisements for a tour where they just play Greatest Hits setlists and the stuff is just paint-by-numbers renditions of their classic songs.

>>64560221
They're literally just his last recordings, just because they're his "final" works doesn't make them any better.

Not him but I thought it was worth a spin. Interesting look at how they made their music and it had it's moments.

>>64560655
It wasn't awful by any stretch, it just seemed like a waste of my interest
>>64560406
I can't decide what's worse: throwaway but listenable pop meant for the Ashlee Simpsons and Heidi Montags of the world, sung by someone who you'd think would merit the best music in Max Martin's vaults (MDNA), or experimental music whose experiments went horribly, horribly wrong (Rebel Heart).

>>64561228
This was a great idea, well executed.
Sparks get better as they get older.
>>64564063
>kiss forever
this idea doesnt sound nearly as cool
>>64564028
Guys who can still put on a lively, energetic show like Paul McCartney don't need to retire. Guys like Bob Dylan who look like a shambling corpse do need to retire.
You need to retire when:
>your rhythm section is dead (The Who)
>you rely on fill-ins at prominent positions who serve no purpose other than emulating the original guys (Kiss)
>people only go to your shows for the bragging rights that they saw you perform (Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry)
>>64564122
I'm guilty of the last one. Bob came around to my college and it was a free show. Figured I'd go so I could say I saw him... I'm glad I didn't pay the $50 everybody else had to pay
Brian May and Roger Taylor need to seriously stop going around performing as Queen. Come on. No Freddie=no Queen. Would you want a Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger or a Metallica without James Hetfield?
>>64564122
>>people only go to your shows for the bragging rights that they saw you perform (Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry)
I've gotten so many accidental bragging rights.
Saw Dylan at a show where I paid to see the two support acts (The Flaming Lips and The Violent Femmes) and he was shit, but in 40 years I'll be talking that shit up like it was Woodstock (which was also probably shit).
>>64564143

>>64564211
Not at all, but he seemed bored when I saw him. And it was supposed to be opening night of the latest leg of his tour. His band was really good but I wouldn't have paid that much to see him under normal circumstances
I was going to say REO Speedwagon, but then I remembered they haven't had an album out in this decade and the last one they did was (lyl) a Christmas album.
>>64564211
At least BB King stayed pretty solid up until the last few years of his life.

>>64564302
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtvdgETe4Yc
He's still pretty good at this '13 show. Not as tight as he once was, but he gets out his signature tone and also could still sing just fine.
I guess Chuck Berry is paying the price for a lifetime of sodomizing 13 year old girls and making them taste his poop. You get the old age you deserve.
>>64564450
You think the Kanye collab rejuvenated him a bit?
Guided By Voices released a new album this year and it was terrible. I really wish Robert Pollard would just stop already.
It depends. Solo artists like Bob Dylan can generally keep going until they die because their music is individual artistic expression. Bands however are basically product, so there's absolutely no reason for X hair metal band to release a new CD in 2016.
>>64563532
It sounds like a Pantera song got left on the cutting room floor.
>>64561508
this is the most surprising one in the whole thread
>>64564492
BB played fine (for 88), had a great voice still, ate well, fucked around in older age, and was adored by all who knew him. He even made a fantastic blues cover record in 2008. I say he got the old age he deserved.
Berry hasn't done anything noteworthy in many decades.
>>64564783
Chuck actually hasn't set foot in the studio since Rockit in 1979, which was actually a pretty good record so maybe he believed in quit while you're ahead. Certainly I wouldn't want to see him try and release new music in his current state.
Fuck, Ravi Shenkar on his final world tour at 92 was playing better, tighter, and faster than Chuck.
Filter released a new album last month.
>>64559976

I seem to remember Christgau shitting on BB King and Willie Nelson's late career albums.
>>64561798

>>64564845
He gave up on life in the 80s and became an oldies act. Also his playing skills got progressively lazier.

Doesn't stop them from trying anyway.
>>64565126
He hasn't been able to vocally pull off that shit since 1975. He went downhill early on.
>>64564063
Gene Simmons is also a greedy jew who milks every cent out of that shitty band.
Has anyone seen Sun Ra Arkestra lately? It seems weird that they're touring and performing since the man himself has been dead for so long
And Angus still wants to do one more before he retires.
>>64564155
Well according to May, Adam Lambert has a better vocal range than Freddie and is just as charismatic onstage. In other words he's gone senile.
>>64565234
A band this horrifying doesn't deserve a logo as cool as that beetle thingie they use.
Yep. Apparently the "Final Countdown" guys put out a new album last year. I saw it at a Barnes & Noble earlier today.
I live in the US.
They haven't had a song or album even come close to getting on our charts since 1988.
>>64561129

Thankfully new Queen albums stopped after 1995.
>>64565359

>>64565408
No, I'm pretty sure the recent releases are actually archives. Or reissues. The man's discography is certainly large enough for it.

>He's a faggot with an acoustic guitar singing faux-Americana. I don't think anyone will mind if he keeps going until he's 90.
Yeah yeah, I know James Taylor's music lends itself to being an old guy better than Motley Crue's does, I mean more that he's a completely obnoxious, utterly insane Obama nutrider.

>>64565359
Without Steve Perry, they're pretty much a cover act.
>>64566497
Precisely because they have gotten old. Rock music is hard enough for the young, it's ridiculous to expect geriatrics to be good at it (there are some who continue to be, but they are the exception to the rule). Plus, in Floyd's case, they were never the same after the split with Roger Waters, anyway.
>>64560857
This may very well be the last one from them though. At least they left us with a really good final album.

this
>>64566653
When it came out, I actually didn't believe it. I totally thought it was some joke.
>>64566700
I was thinking more of the lifestyle (especially when touring) than the complexity of the music, actually. The effect of the drugs and alcohol and late nights adds up.
In the case of prog rock, there's a fair bit of complexity on the composition side, too. Playing ability as such is probably the last thing to go, but a lot of them seem to lose their game when it comes to writing and composition. And it's harder to get it up for shows consistently.
"Everyone has a limited number of good songs in them and I'm no exception. Paul McCartney, one of the finest songwriters of the 20th century, has written nothing but manure for over 25 years. Rock stars over 30 do not produce important material."
