Damn this album is good, are there any other Sly and the Family Stone fans here? So far, they're easily the best funk band I've heard.
And is it just me or does Sly's voice change completely change from the last album to this one? In "There's a Riot Goin' On", he sounds groany, in this one it's like an exaggerated funk voice.

It's sad that the Family Stone broke up just 2 years after this album was released, and Sly was never really the same again. He was recently living in a van, maybe still is, but he won a 5 million dollar lawsuit over royalties owed to him.

That album was way ahead of its time, there was some good funk before that but nothing quite as complex as Riot. But the Family Stone's pre-Riot stuff is also really good.

Just finished spinning Life, man that shit is raw. Some of it makes Hendrix sound tame. Fuckin' nasty. I think Stand! is my favorite overall, followed by Fresh, but Life may be moving up in my considerations, i dunno. Stand is just 100% flawless though.
