It's because a disproportionate amount of the userbase is angsty and depressed, and feels kinship in finding these traits in other users.
At least that is how it is for me; I am glad that I can come to a place where it's assumed and not a big deal that you want to kill yourself rather than some sort of serious shocking revelation.

When my depression was going all out I kinda lost interest in anything that wasn't doing lots of drinks and drugs. So no music...though I would have Coward by Swans (the version of the track on Public Castration Is A Good Idea) on repeat on full volume.
