Just so you all know, I was one of the writers who gave The Life of Pablo one of the lowest scores.
I also gave Views a 7.0, we'll see how my shit factors in there. I don't know much about that review (views. I'm suspecting it won't be given BNM but I don't know) but I figured, you guys are big DG fans, fate is on your side... when I got assigned to this review I was like... shit.

It's an average of a few writers within the genre. Bigger releases get way more input. Smaller releases (such as BP) only have 2-3 people working on the review - both of us agreed a 9.1 was appropriate and the higher-ups OK'd it earlier today.

I found his earlier work fantastic. At pitchfork we tend to grade stuff based on a comparison to earlier work, but I thought that was pretty obvious. The 0-10 scale is not universal. A Kanye 9/10 is different than a small indie artist 9/10.

I think that BP isn't as heavy on underlying messages as it is an instant "greatest hits." We sat there with the lyrics all day yesterday and tried to figure out what it was about. But, it's the typical themes... suicidal, murderous, and cryptic as all hell. The score is mostly due to how the band effortlessly combines the musical styles of all their previous albums in less than 40 minutes

You're right. We assign scores with a random number generator. The margins are different for every artist (for example, Kanye albums are rated from 7.5 to 10. MBDTF's 10 was a pretty lucky coincidence.

I'm not sure but I think the consensus was that AnCo's shift into heavy walls of noise (danse manatee excluded) is something very unfavorable. They like the sounds to be distinguishable and work together like they're blended... not thrown together and seeing what sticks (FloriDada did stick... Golden Gal sticked... nothing else did really)
