White audiences have been trying to get into rap since NWA. But rappers purposely alienated them, as well as other blacks.
Eminem was an important step in this process. But even he grew up in Detroit, and didn't give a fuck if some 16 year old white girl liked them.
Then came Drake. Pretty, lightskinned, and willing to make songs not about the struggle of an oppresive infrastructure but broad angst about ex-girlfriends, the shit that pop-rock was doing in the early 2000s.
But that was only half the work. The other half is getting blacks to not reject him for blatantly pandering to suburban teenagers. He did that by hanging on to the Young Money label until his career was self sustaining. Then he paid Quentin miller and a dozen other people millions to give him into a pseudo-street persona.
Drake doesn't have to storytell or carry an emotion. He taps into the myopic worldview of a lot of millenials who think their world ended when they got left on a read reciept texting their crush.

At best Drake riffs off modern r&b trends, a more subtle version of chris brown. Most of his songs follow a pattern of "I deserve you" with other randian themes, often humblebragging about females attempting to reenter his life.
These lyrics were fleeting as best as r&b. Listen to Boyz II Men. There's supplication, repentance, there's pain and anger, but there's a difference between pain and resentment, which is what Drake goes for. He is a lot closer to Taylor Swift's "you were too fucking stupid to see I was your match now suffer" shtick than any r&b artists. Retribution is not r&b

Quentin Miller is soft enough to get his ass whipped by Meek Mill.
But he wrote pretty much everything Drake did in 2015, and brilliantly so. You can literally tell when Drake is on a QM verse. There's no singy repitition, the delivery is direct, the rhymes are clever and above all he sounds like a full time rapper. Drake dropped the word "nigga" on IYRTITL in exactly the right places, something he'd never done.

This isn't a rap album. Kinda disappointing. I hated Drake but I really liked IYRTITL. The production is pretty steller but it just sounds like Drake is running out of ideas for good melodies/hooks. and he completely loses his bite. 5/10
This isn't a perfect album, but I think it will be remembered as Drake's best and possibly be his best selling album
It's very personal, quite epic in scale and definitely his most "alternative" album that takes the most chances
