More shit like this? I've listened to their other stuff and also artists like Talking Heads and Nick Cave, but I still haven't found anything that reaches it's level. Are there any artists and albums that reach it's melancholy and depression?

Turn on the Bright Lights - Interpol

Everyone compares them to JD. It will literally blow your mind, If you have t listened to it before
>>
>>64414589
listen to their next album "closer"
>>
>>64414665
If I know Joy Division fanboys they'll hate Interpol for being Joy Division rip-offs even thought they're obviously clones of Television
>>
>>64414692
I have, it surely is melancholic as hell, but some of the songs just ruin it,

i know but there are few nice melancholic records like Bauhaus - In the Flat Field. I would say that Burning From the Inside is pretty gloomy too. The Cure - Pornography.. Pic rel is my favourite. Title speaks for itself.
>>
Have A Nice Life, Interpol and Sun Devoured Earth are influenced by that post-punk stuff and capture that feeling fairly well
Old Gray
maybe The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me
Lots of atmospheric black metal, Xasthur and Woods of Desolation are very good for example. Ghost Bath are great too.
Phil Elverum's stuff (The Glow Pt. 2, Wind's Poem, Dawn), Elliott Smith, Giles Corey
I Am A Lake Of Burning Orchids

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Grouper I find very soothing when I'm feeling down, though I wouldn't say they capture that feeling of depression as much as the others above.

Check Blindead - Absence. It's decent record.
I find newest Bjork pretty melancholic too.

By The Sound
>>
Have A Nice Life, Giles Corey, Carrisa's Wierd have some very sad tracks, The Tired Sounds Of Stars Of The Lid is a masterpiece in my eyes
>>
>>64414711
theyre clones of neither, they have their own sound
>>
>>64415860
They use a modern overproduced sound but they're otherwise complete clones of Television. Obstacle 1's main riff is identical to Marquee Moon's
>>
Maybe The Cure - Pornography,
Does it have to be post-punk? Current 93 have a few records that are dark, Im thinking mainly of Thunder Perfect Mind and All The Little Pretty Horsies
>>

I bet if you got to ask interpol about television, theyd be like "nah never heard of them" like the strokes did. but thats an assumption. here's why your wrong:

- interpol's sound isn't overproduced. Comparing the demo versions of songs like PDA and Roland, they sound very similar. the structures are exactly the same. the only difference (and i say from experience, i have a similar guitar rig to daniel kessler with an epiphone hollowbody and a nice fender amp with ovrdr, dist, delay, and reverb pedals) is that the mics are much better. the overall recording of the guitar is hardly altered and actually sounds like what it wouldve sounded like in the studio.

the reverb is really what makes the sound click. they drown the guitars in it. whether you like that or not is your preference. the drums are the most produced instrument on the whole album. thats because sams drums are mixed with reverb as well as the guitar. the bass is subtle, but powerful and essential.

- marque moon is an awesome album and a great song. but interpol didn't necessarily rip them off.

#1: the first chord on the television song is the only one that's similar at 0:04 when the chord changes, it's different from Obstacle 1. however, interpol uses it in a higher key

#2 interpol stays on a minor (sad song) chord progression, whereas television goes off and stays on more of a classic rock progression and is a little more upbeat.

#3 although television were among the first bands to only play chords on the top strings, they just popularized it. Everybody does this now, its not really a rip off, just an influence. Vampire weekend, pheonix, no age, yo la tengo, the strokes, interpol: they all do this, but its not a bad thing (im not saying all those bands are good, just making a point)

I've been shilling this lately. A lot of people accuse them of being too derivative of Joy Division but I'd rather say they have have a similar but unique sound. A lot more garage rock influences, you can tell they're from Detroit.

Also try Deathconciousness - Have a Nice Life
>>
>>64417241
HANL basically sounds like timestretched Joy Division
>>
>>64417116
album cover tho
>>
>>64417282
Ehh, I guess. Ian Curtis definitely has a more baritone voice and HANL vocals sound more pop-punky. But pretty similar sounding music I guess
>>
The Sound
The Chameleons
The Cure
The Comsat Angels

Not quite as depressing, but it's kind of hard to compete against someone with such a fucked up life/illness who was literally suicidal.
>>
>>64416551
>although television were among the first bands to only play chords on the top strings

are you serious?
>>
>>64417241
protomartyr are more like good interpol + the stooges than updated joy division

not really a melancholy or depressing vibe, but i like em

if you play guitar and learn how to play marquee moon and the sometimes by the strokes to compare, you'd know what im talking about. like i said, its not a bad thing at all. it actually sounds great, imo. its a technique, not an insult. you pluck only the G B and high E strings of a bar chord...
>>
>>64417696
also, television utilized this technique more than any other band before them, but they didnt like "invent" it per say. talking heads did some of this, but not as much as television
>>
>>64417193
yeah i kinda guessed thats what he was thinking. its stupid really, because reverb is such a beautiful effect.

really, overproduction makes you think that a computer is digitalizing the sound and drowning the original music in bass. put bluntly, in some cases overproduction rapes the original sound of the music and makes it superficial and one dimentional. its frequent in a lot of rap and metal.

its not always a bad thing and i like this band, but here's an example of something one could argue as being overproduced:
