Why is Slaughter of the Soul so widely accepted as shit yet Heartwork isn't? Both records are the same in that they took the standard death metal formula, cleaned it up, dumbed it down, presented it in a poppy format and repackaged it for marketability. Sure Heartwork is a more technically intricate release but in death metal flashy technicality isn't the point, is it because SotS would go to influence core music while Heartwork's influence was kept within metal?

Both are not shit. They are solid heavy metal albums, but a step down in extremes compared to their predecessors. They are both remembered as shit because fans of the extreme style were disappointed. When you look at carcass interviews it's clear they were satisfied with what they had done with the first three albums and didn't want to continue with that style. Also they were big fans of classic heavy metal so they went in that direction. Of course there was an outcry, but if you don't judge Heartwork by the standards of mega primitive gore brutality of death, it's good.

well when Seven Chalices came out I didn't like black/death, I listened to it only because it came out on NOEVDIA and it had a cool as fuck artwork.
I was blown away: it's filthy as fuck, yet powerful with a mystic atmosphere. The vocal and the guitars are sloppy but they use they're sloppiness expressively enhancing the muddy tone and deranged feel.
Then it opened a way for me to get into all that delicious NWN! stuff which I actiely avoided before.

Simple reason, it's heavy and that's all there needs to be.
Every riff and fill serves to create this filthy and unholy mass of pure hatred and virulence. It's death metal stripped down to its most blasphemous roots, there isn't the plodding get-down-with-it grooves found in modern pro-tool br00tal death. this is just unfiltered sewage in music form. It's simply heavy and uncompromisingly crushing. that's all their needs to be, I can see why people would hate it as it's not particularly catchy and doesn't focus on making memorable stand out riffs, but everything comes together nicely in the end for what the band wants to make. I still prefer old school death metal/OSDM revival in general, but that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of music such as this.

The fact that so many books still name Deathspell Omega as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" black metal band ever only tells you how far black metal still is from becoming a serious art. Death metal critics have long recognized that the greatest death metal bands of all times are Demilich and Atheist, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Thrash critics rank the highly controversial Coroner over thrash bands who were highly popular in radio stations around the bay area. Black metal critics are still blinded by commercial success. Deathspell Omega sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Death metal critics grow up listening to a lot of death metal of the past, thrash metal critics grow up listening to a lot of thrash metal of the past. Black metal critics are often totally ignorant of the black metal of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Deathspell Omega did anything worthy of being saved.

Contemporary black metal bands never spoke highly of Deathspell Omega, and for good reason. They could never figure out why Deathspell Omega's songs should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that Deathspell Omega were simply lucky to become a folk phenomenon (thanks to "Deathspell Omania", which had nothing to do with their musical merits). There's two problems with the kabbalah: going from one sephira (or qlipha) to the next works through lucid dreaming, which is hard to achieve for some persons, and there's a strong risk that you'll experience depersonalization and alienating influences.
I'm trying to find a copy of the liber Azerate I can use but the only shit I found was in Russian. So other than that I just read about traditional Kabbalah and Christian Gnosticism (the Ordo Aurum Solis specifically, which borrows heavily from the Golden Dawn) but I don't like how many formulas require you to beg God to do stuff for you.

kabbalah is entirely useless and a waste of time, lucid dreaming poses absolutely no danger, danger comes from trying to kill your ego or working with negative entities, btw there's a pretty good library containing all the essentials on /fringe/ I'd recommend reading through IIH and book of knowledge the most, and actually don't read many books because only a few are enough to send you on your way
