Souvlaki is always treated as a cornerstone of Shoegaze, and I honestly don't see why. Am I approaching it wrong?

I've always seen this as more of a dream pop album. There are undoubtedly some shoegaze sections though, Souvlaki Space Station for instance.

This is how I feel about it.
One thing I always enjoyed about Souvlaki is its emotional resonance. Songs like Alison, Machine Gun and Dagger are like being stabbed in the heart.

I have given FtM a fair amount of listens but I keep believing that Deloused shits on it anyday.
Cygnus is very good, so is The Widow.
L'Via is ok but a bit too much spic cheese for me.
Miranda is filler and then comes the 30 min track that does nothing for me. Maybe it would work if it came as seperate tracks.

FtM is overrated by contrarians. Its pretty good, but not their best. Amputechture is the real best TMV album imo, followed by Deloused and then FtM, then it kind of falls off a cliff to Noctourniquet, then Bedlam, then Octahedron.

It's definitely more shoegaze than dream pop. Evidently haven't listened to a lot of dream pop desu.
There isn't that much to 'get' with this. It's incredibly dreamy, druggy shoegaze. It creates the atmosphere of falling through the bedsheets in the naked arms of a lover during an ecstasy high.
It's a cornerstone because it was one of the first of its kind.
