It's shoegaze with black metal influences. Still one of the best albums in the last decade.

>Still one of the best albums in the last decade
>>64388289
it's tru m8
Hahahah. No.
Genrewise, call it what you will, but it's still a solid block of sun-charred shit. The whole album has literally TWO phases. Loud [with too many shit just piled up together, forming only a wall of noise], and those calm pauses which are supposed to imitate "introspective" or some such nonsense, silence colored in.
Srsly how do you guys get off on such simply concocted garbage?
Yes, i do enjoy bands like My Chemical Romance

what makes black metal black metal is a musical lineage beginning with evil, raw-sounding thrash bands like celtic frost, sodom, bathory, etc...
there's also an aesthetic and ideological component. black metal is antihumanist, transcendent, nihilistic, subversive. it's very frequently antireligious or blasphemous, but not always. it's romanticist in its flair for melodrama and reverence of nature, the past, the unknown...
the music reflects this ideology and aesthetic. the lo-fi, grating guitar tone and blastbeat drumming was originally about subverting the commercialization and aesthetic 'softening' of heavy metal.
black metal in the vein of burzum, enslaved and emperor blends well with shoegaze because of it's penchant for expansive, atmospheric wall-of-sound type compositions.
deafheaven is an interesting entity because musically, they weave the 2 genres quite well, however they've eschewed all of the antihumanist and subversive spirit of black metal by making their music (both in terms of production and composition) quite lush, pleasing, unconfrontational, etc. they also wear fashionable clothes on stage (instead of black leather and medieval weaponry) and seem generally pleasant and mild-mannered in interviews.
this is essentially an antithesis of what black metal was originally intended to be, and depending on whether or not you consider the ideological/aesthetic component to be essential to what black metal actually is, deafheaven may or may not fit the bill (the joke being that extreme purists will argue that 99% of black metal is untrue sellout garbage, and only the kvltest of the kvlt les légions noires demo limited to 6 copies made by some guy who comitted suicide is REAL TRUE black metal). the fact that we're STILL having this discussion is testament to just how much of a snobby gatekeeper attitude black metal fans have.

And it's great because it keeps the faggots out.

> elitism is a bad thing
>>64393944
Elitism only feels like a good thing when you're part of the "elite"
I'm sure you hate it when Hipsters, SJW's and Christfags are doing it, that's why people outside the "elite" of black metal hate it.
>>64387975
Yes, we love black metal
>>64393970
>I'm sure you hate it when Hipsters, SJW's and Christfags are doing it,
Not the guy you're responding to but I don't give a fuck because I don't like those people and don't want to be a part of their groups.
>>64393944
ups and downs, my friend. at it's best, elitism gives us a strict standards for ensuring the quality of music, art, etc... at it's worst, you get genocide and ethnic cleansing, refugee detainment camps, pretentious art snobs, and faggy weebs like you and >>64393827 who listen to too much black metal and don't get enough sunshine or social interaction.
in any case, sunbather is boring as fuck (new bermuda is pretty good though).
>>64394261
> elitism leads to ethnic cleansing
>>64388588
I don't know, annon. But there is a great mass of people who think abusing the loud/soft dynamic is the greatest thing in metal. It's been an aesthetic nightmare since cockrock popularized it in the 80s, it continued with nu metal, metalcore, shit tier "progressive" metal like opeth & edge of sanity.... this black gaze thing isn't even the first time it's been used in black metal, it's also a popular compositional technique in melodic black metal (see dissection)...
Plebs being plebs.

racialized elitism manifest as a broad and violent social force, yeah, i'd say that is a major motivation for ethnic cleansing.
dont be so fucking pedantic
>>64388324
I'm not the other guy, but...
IMHO I enjoyed it at first, then got bored of it after a while, it's worth at least one or two listens , but other than mashing together two different genres, I don't feel like it brings anything particularly groundbreaking to the table
