>How did people find out about alternative music back in the pre-internet days?
Basically it worked like this
>Guy discover some current mainstream band or discover old mainstream band by old people or friends and etc.. that discovered them with old people
>he listen to the sound and think its the best thing on this universe, since he knew only an ultra tiny group of bands, some band being classified as the "sound of god" is not a hard thing
>he decides to try to play this type of sound
>make a band with friends.
>show music to friends not on the band
>PS: this make his friends discover his band
>while making live shows where multiple bands will play at the same day, he discover other bands
>if his friends go to his shows because they like the band, or just to give him support, they will discover those bands playing there too.
>Some of those bands influence their friends to start making music too and new bands are created that the band and their friends will discover
now the bands itself playing non mainstream genres is the tricky part and basically goes like this
>some of the guys of those bands really like some specific part of song and focus on this aspect of it and create a new genre by doing it
>others will try to get famous and will try to make the next hit by trying to focus on stuff they believed made the songs a hit, this happened alot with electronic music
>some love hard mainstream songs and after some amount of time get bored of it and think its not hard enought, they try to make harder things and so create music on non mainstream genres.
At the time you needed specific buttlefly effects to happen to make you know bands.
Now with internet, you need just one and with it you will discover many bands
