Because pretty much everything about it is bad. The songwriting is audibly uninspired and forced. Even the best song on there, New Town Burnout, is poorly written and makes no progression whatsoever, it just goes around in pointless circles. Some songs start out sounding cool - Wide Eyes for example - but then become monotonous and awkward when the songwriting proves to be painfully underdeveloped. On top of that, the sonic approach on this album is absolutely hideous. The effects make no sense within the context of the songs and only detract from the melody, which is the complete opposite of everything Animal Collective had done up to this point. The album is absolutely repulsive. I actually feel bad for Animal Collective when listening to this.

I think it's strange how some of the best albums of all time get recognized for their greatness and some don't. In an ideal world, Feels would be seen as being Animal Collective's equivalent to Talk Talk's Laughing Stock or Yes's Close to the Edge. If Yes had the same luck as Animal Collective, these results would be like indicating 90125 as their best album with Close to the Edge being seen as not particularly better than anything else they did. *Not saying Merriweather is as bad as 90125 - it's a great album, but still.

I dig it. I guess not a lot of people will share my sentiments but I generally rate music on how it lived up to what the artist's vision for it was. Does that make sense? For CHZ their goal was to make it sound like an alien band...like what you would hear if you could tune into an alien radio station and honestly they succeeded in that really well. It genuinely sounds otherworldly. It's chaotic and harsh and sometimes the effects are too abrasive but that's exactly what I would expect to hear from an alien band. There are things I personally don't like about it...it's a good album but I don't really consider it a good "animal collective" album. Doesn't have the usual sense of cohesion or harmony the other albums do. Like there are Avey songs and panda songs and a deakin song. It's almost just like a bunch of solo songs put on one album. Which isn't bad but like I said not really what I expect from animal collective. I dunno
