My two favorite piano concertos are Charles Wuorinen's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Alfred Schnittke's Concerto for Piano and Strings.
I've also come for recommendatos for the works of Henri Pousseur and of Hans Otte. And for Sonorism, too.

Michelangeli - Live in concert

Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, New Philharmonia Orchestra

London, 1965

Greig - Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16

I'm convinced this is the greatest half hour any piano has been ever recorded experiencing. Just a total pianist orgasm.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl3rN0-qyuU

I used to think Rubinstein's famous recording was definitive... This completely blows any competition away. Michelangeli mines dramatic depths others aren't even aware of. Total virtuosity.
>>
Ravels Piano concerto in G is a favorite of mine.

Pardon the poor soundquality of this recording, but I think that's the closest there is to a definitive playing of this concerto

best peice ever:

Prove me wrong. Pro tip: you can't
>>
>>64342755
First of all, read the background and the context of the piece. For example, what is the composer trying to accomplish, when and where was the piece written and what was going on at that place and time.
You should listen for melody and rhythm. Find the main theme and listen to how it evolves. Here is an example where Mozart takes a well-known theme and transforms it into few different things.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0-U3PQPs3k

And here Beethoven doing it. You can clearly see the differences.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djBHkNchLuk

Another thing is to state the emotion a piece depicts or evokes in you. You should also visualize and let your imagination do the thing. Maybe the best way to experience this is with the Impressionists. Here's some Debussy as an example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvMboyPpVMk

And it is also important to be patient, because classical music takes time to fully grasp and understand.

Traditional music, old military marches. Used to love grindcore and techdeath but dont really listen to that anymore. occasionally crank nile's annihilation of the wicked or pig detroyer's terrifyer but those are literally the only 2 albums I'll listen to anymore.

>>64343930
>distract yourself as much as possible from the fact that what you are hearing is shit
you dumb. learning about a composer only helps give you some background on why the music is the way it is. The music is excellent with or without background knowledge. That's not disputed. If you're averse to learning perhaps you should stick to popular music? its easy to digest and doesn't require further reading to understand.

for me a "program" is something you run on a computer.

a "programme" is something you pick up at the concert, read through the notes about the pieces, players, composers, conductors etc.

something >>64344689 would know if he'd ever been to a classical concert.

That you need more than a pair of ears to listen to classical.
You don't need to treat it any differently than any other type of music, at least when it comes to casual listening.

I hope you're not one of those faggots that thinks listening to "RELAXING PIANO MUSIC FOR STUDYING" compilations in Youtube is listening to classical.

his favorite is Horenstein's iirc.

it is also one of my favorites, though i do wish the acoustic wasn't so reverberant (oh, the royal albert hall). there's nothing quite like Horenstein's ascension near the end though. one of Horenstein's best strengths was dynamics i think and it really shows in that particular recording. though it's littered with coughs and a few nervous parts (it was both Horenstein's and the orchestras first time ever performing the work)

Kubelik uses german seating and so does Wyn Morris. the latter's conception i actually like quite a bit but it's ruined by the horribly loud and dynamically compressed recording (with a pretty unnatural balance between chorus/orchestra). Kubelik as always is tasteful and generally irreproachable.

Stokowski is another obvious choice as he had a long history with the work dating back to when he attended Mahler's own rehearsals before the premiere. he turns in a very good performance and makes the scratchy 50s NY orchestra actually play very well. i think my only complaint is that there are a few bizarre miking problems. like the children's chorus is weirdly pushed forward in the first movement and it sounds a bit cheesy. but that's to be expected from a mono broadcast.
