Most top 40 pop stars can play instruments to some degree. Generally guitar or piano. And people generally overstate the talent of bands and artists they like compared to ones they don't like, especially since most people probably can't really tell you what makes a good guitarist or other instrument vs a bad one.

This guy didn't prepare the script for this video very well. He went on for like 2 minutes about how it's usually men listening to metal.
Also I like how at one point he said there was no good bands today and then later on says there are a lot of good bands that are relatively underground. His main point goes from "there's no good music anymore" to "well there is but they're not on top 40 radio". And he seems like he doesn't know any female musicians outside of the ones on top 40 radio.
