Although I am flattered that I'm listed on here as a "starting point", I have a problem with this chart. There are about 50 or so artists listed. The hundreds of others that post in these threads who are excluded, who are being told therefore that their music isn't "essential" feel like shit when they see this chart. That is called elitism. Furthermore, unlike other mu charts, I doubt this was made by an un-biased fan of these artists. We don't need this element in our close-knit little bandcamp community.
Does Foliage still shit these threads up? What ever happened to that faggot?

Thank you for voicing this opinion. When I set out to make the chart, I had only good intentions, but this has shown me that it probably does more harm than good...
I'll stop making and sharing the chart.
A database would still be cool, cataloging all the artists who have posted on here, and it would mean that nobody gets missed out, especially if it's a page anyone can edit.
>>64242096
I actually liked the idea of "essential" starting points, with things branching out similar to when a website recommends an artist based on another artists
>>64242155
I suppose the main problem is that the chart would have to encompass every single artist. It might be better to have a spreadsheet with artists and their related genre tags etc, a bit like rym
>>64242096
Despite my opinion against the chart, I do want to say thank you for all of the effort you put into it! A database would be really cool. My fear would that it'd be clogged, abused, and ignored. As much as we try to be a community, a bad grape spoils the bunch and it could very well go to shit faster than whenever my roommate decides to eat Taco Bell.

And yes, I would worry about a publicly editable database... It would be all too easy for Nick Plante to edit Abelian's section for example, or even a complete outsider to come in and fuck it all up. I suppose backups and IP blocking could help prevent against that...

>the main problem is that the chart would have to encompass every single artist
this is why even though i like the idea of a bandcamp chart we really can't do it. since none of us are really much popular than the other it makes other artists feel like shit when we're all on the same level.
>>64242424

A taste of some new stuff I've been working on. I recorded all live instruments this time. No amp sims, no VDrums. There will be fake keyboards on some of the other songs. Still raw and gross but in a different way.
>>64242096
Or just a better chart. The flowchart style ones are super ugly and not space-economical because of the need to have lines that make sense and can be followed. It would be better to just do rows, with the artist furthest left, aka the one you read first, being the most accessible. There's no need to connect genres, just a have a row or two for each genre, and that way you'll be able to get more artists in. And they don't necessarily have to be popular or well liked. Just here a lot and preferably not the only one in their genre (so that we don't have loner rows.) A decent looking chart will probably make the trash we put out seem more legit to /mu/ at large too. Let's all get taken seriously guys!

YESSSSS THIS REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING I'D HEAR ON A TONY HAWK GAME
>>64226846
This is interesting texturally, I think it would be much better if you added some melody to it and brought it to life.
>>64226627
Add a little bit more melody, I feel like you listened to MBV and are just trying to do that.

Here's my two cents on the chart. I love the idea of the hard but the hardest thing is that it's going to hurt a lot of peoples feelings that being said. I think it's a good thing and could easily be a driver for people to try and better themselves and earn a place on the chart, that being said. There's a lot of talent here and many deserve to be on the chart and many more who don't. I think more than anything it would cause a huge clashing of egos beucase I'm already seeing bits of entitlement when it comes to it.
There's also a lot of great artists who used to post here who have come and gone (three that come to mind are: TV Sets, Sat Up and Begged, and I am a Lake of Burning Orchids) Do they deserve a place on the chart? I think the idea of a chart is great if we have two.
One being of /mu/ bandcamp classics for the artists who have truly earned it and deserve it. And once for up and coming buzz artists. I think it's only fair. But both would have to get rotated out with diffrent artists fairly often. But then comes the question of when does an artists go from up and coming to classic? IDK I think the idea is great but we may have problems with egos.
IDK It's kind of hard to articulate every point in my head about the chart, I hope what I said made sense.

Nah not a lame excuse, just a stylistic choice youre trying out. Ill give your bc a follow and check out future releases!

I second this, I know that my music sucks but not everybody looks at themselves like that. ejem *abelian, onat, vtimdom* are examples of what are you saying.
I prefer a grid, separated with genres from "more accessible" to "more experimental" and then ranking them up using their sales.
Its not fair, but most of the time the guys who make better music, sell more.
i know this isn't a bandcamp page but i've been working on a song i haven't finished and don't have anyone i can get honest feedback from. vocals are just a first take and i'd like to add another verse/chorus. basically just curious if the electronic/acoustic sounds fit well together or if they sound out of place.
i will post my bandcamp later. leaving feedback in other posts

TLDR a bandcamp chart probably just won't work. Te database idea is solid but may be too prone to foul play and fuckery. In all honesty the threads themselves probably serve the purpose the best. Want to hear stuff by regular posters? Go in the thread. Want to find something you saw a while back? Ask in the thread, someone will know.
That said, the charts have a very official, /mu/ approved vibe that I dig like a grave.

Dubs+Trips has it down exactly as it shall go. Great idea, but nothing changes
>>64224893
not to keen on the vocals. could explore a little more with the sound too. but i dig it. roland under the covers is cool.
>>64242324
awesome as always.
>>64242866
mixing and production is spot on. good job. like to hear your vocals less processed but that's just a matter of taste.
>>64242625
