I don't hate Tool. I just think a lot of their music is kind of boring. That said, they have written some pretty decent songs and I think Maynard is an alright guy from what I've seen. They have good instrumentation with groovy odd time signatures sometimes but still isn't really my swag. Wings for Marie is genuinely beautiful though.

Tool has some legitimately "deep" moments.
Wings for Marie 1 and 2 form a legitimately compelling exploration of death, religion, family, and unbelief.

/mu/ thinks Tool is always trying to be serious, though, and I think that's why Tool gets so much hate. What /mu/ can't see is that the band has a great sense of humor, and they often make fun of themselves/troll their audiences. Rosetta Stoned is a pretty funny satire of the average Tool fan/Tool bandmember. Teasing a new album and not releasing it for almost ten years is also pretty funny.
