Requesting albums similar to Pet Sounds, preferably something I can have a great experience listening while stoned
Person Pitch by Panda Bear if you haven't heard it yet although assuming you have

Listened to Smile Sessions yet?
>>64175795
>Panda Bear
I actually haven't, I'll give it a go because it's gotten some acclaim
>>64175940
Of course. I only started listening to the Beach Boys this month, but I've given all their big titles a listen. How could I of not listened to the Smile Sessions?
>>64175976
Dunno was starting with the obvious
I didn't listen to smile sessions til a few months after pet sounds
Both of their albums are more Beatles influenced, but this one has a stronger Beach Boys vibe.
Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle (though if you're heard SMiLE, chances are you've heard this).
Perhaps something written or inspired by Burt Bacharach, like, maybe some early Dionne Warwick. Maybe the first two Carpenters' albums, Herb Albert and The Tijuana Brass Band, or Segio Mendez and Brazil 66.

May seem a little weird but I would highly recommend this. It does the whole band with an orchestra thing that pet sounds does and is amazing stoned.
>>64175950
oh my god... you're in for a treat--it's pet sounds' equal to my ears. don't expect the same classical clarity of pet sounds, though; panda bear's album is hazier (read: reverb) and more psychedelic but every bit as melodic and sunny. it's a positively astounding collection of songs, and i hope you have a good time listening!
>>64176286
this
>>64175795
It's not really close to Pet Sounds in any aspect. The songwriting is much, much repetitive - I mean, it's the point of sample-based music - and barely changes chords within a single song whereas Pet Sounds is all about complex chords and key changes. Pet Sounds's harmonies are complex, up to 6 parts arrangements, while Person Pitch is mostly harmonizing the main melody up a third with occasional other stuff here and there, but rather rarely.
I love both albums, but the comparisons really only work on a very superficial level - "happy 60's music but a bit psychedelic with sad lyrics and vocal harmonies"
>>64177205
you're right that there are stark differences. however, panda bear's voice, like it or not, strongly evokes brian wilson's, as do his harmonies. furthermore, his melodies and straightforward lyrics recall those of pet sounds. person pitch stands on its own two feet and is indeed a very different work; however, the comparisons are justified in that a fan of one will likely be a fan of the other.
>>64177271
>panda bear's voice, like it or not, strongly evokes brian wilson's
True, but I guess I consider that a superficial aspect?
>as do his harmonies
Eeeeeh. There's harmonies, but it's not the same kind of harmonies. Different type of writing, arrangement, "sound" that they go for, etc.
>comparisons are justified in that a fan of one will likely be a fan of the other
Not sure. The repetitiveness and harmonic of Person Pitch can be incredibly off-putting. I mean, take Bros, it lasts what, 13 minutes, and only has two chords for the whole thing? A lot of fans of Pet Sounds are musicians who are into it specifically because it hides very complex music under the guise of short pop songs.
But yeah, if you're just into the overall "mood", I guess they are comparable. Kinda.

>mfw person pitch is the inverse of pet sounds
>mfw pet sounds ends with the sound of a train leaving and person pitch starts with the sound of a train arriving

Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear, great stuff
>>64177360
>and only has two chords for the whole thing?
Might be because its a sample, not him playing the guitar.
Panda is ultimately a drummer at heart, and all of his music is based on rhythm. He's all about repetition.

Why don't you kill yourself first?
Teenagers think Pet Sounds is some kind of experimental emotional masterpiece when really it's just The Beatles 2 Faggotronic Boogaloo
I'm 28 years old, I'm probably older than the majority of people on /mu/. I've studied music theory in college for five years. I play more than five instruments including guitar and violin. I'm part if a rock duo and I perform monthly at various places. We've been working on an album since 2014. I think I know what I'm talking about.
To all you Pet Sounds fags, how much music theory do you know? What instruments do you play? I'm guessing none.
>>64176648
Actually this
He always gets shit for sounding like Lennon (as if it's bad) but I agree that it sounds way more pet soundsish
>>64179885
You want to elucidate on exactly how?
I love this album even more than Pet Sounds.
>>64179921
By the way this album is essentially SMiLE, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and Magical Mystery Tour at all once.

A good album is a good album you pretentious shit. That Billy Nicholls album is spotty as fuck by the way, and overrated because of its rarity. Person Pitch is a far superior rec for someone who liked Pet Sounds and is open to something that isn't baroque pop.
>>64175795
I absolutely can't get into Person Pitch. I thought Tomboy was better.

Too bad you didn't study music production otherwise you would have understood why your entire post is wrong
>>64179840
This post just makes me sad. You sound like someone who's gone so far down the road of understanding music on a technical level that you no longer allow yourself to simply enjoy it. Sometimes music doesn't have to be impressive from a music theory standpoint to be listened to. Why attack people for coming to a board about music and looking for more of what they enjoyed? Instead you've chosen to bully them for not getting a full-blown fucking degree in it? For some people this is just a hobby, for some it's not even that, and you have no place in telling them they're less significant than you just because you've wasted years on a really shitty degree.
