It really depends on what you're looking for, OP. Metal is very vast. You want to start fast or slow? Harsh vocals or clean vocals (maybe both)? You like it simple or more technical? How technical is too technical? How you want your lyrical content senpai? There's all sorts of stuff to get into.
Give me something a bit more specific than just "metal" and I can definitely help you.

I was 21 when I got into metal but I jumped off the deep end into black metal. Ended up branching out into death and sludge. I recommend checking out the black metal classics and listening to Entombed and Death.

[spoiler]Also, as an aside, I don't post much on here, but what's with the music politics? Posted a prog metal album and I got all these "pretentious" memes. Whatever, I suppose it's a taste thing, but I fail to see that as any actual criticism. Shit, usually the more "pretentious and cheesy" it gets, the more I seem to enjoy it.
