Ok, so bear with me.
There are all sorts of memes that most of us don't really have a reason to really understand-- few people stay on /mu/ for more than a year. However, everyone who enters knows what the previous generation liked and instinctually penalizes anyone who speaks ill of it. A similar effect is true vis-a-vis albums. The effect is illustrated in pic related.
By getting a few posters together to adamantly support some position for a few months, then, you can make any opinion seem valid, and direct the course of /mu/ history. This explains the caveman Spongebob meme, Animal Collective, and Neutral Milk Hotel, just to scratch the surface

Nah, /mu/ has definitely changed in the 6 years I've been surfing. Besides all of the stupid anime and shit posting that's here now, people are a lot more harsh on /mu/ core
