as a jazz fan, Pass is great and all, but he's just a little bit too clean, you know

here is one of my favorite guitar videos on YouTube - Baden Powell with Steve Swallow on bass and Bob Moses on drums in Berlin Festival Guitar Workshop in 1967

Frisell is such a comfy, nostalgia filled armchair-fireplace-blanket-pipe guy these days

his solo guitar album Silent Comedy from a couple of years ago was pretty ace, though

Frisell's Lennon tribute was the worst - at least Guitar in the Space Age had some cool tracks, the new soundtrack album is pretty strong on the snoozy dad wankery, though

hard to believe some times that he was the guitarist in Naked City

Pass is great though. His tone is weird though, it's a little thin. There's a lot of classical in his playing and I don't like classical. I play his shit with more jazzy tone and it sounds better imo.

Pass didn't always play with that kind of classic style acoustic sound that for example his Unforgettable version of Autumn Leaves has, though

I love his duet playing with Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass - so much fun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RPkohp10EQ

your playing would sound better if you came out of the closet, I think
>>
>>64166524

Frisell is pretty much untouchable to me. You can hear Wes Montgomery and all those guys in him but he brings so much to his playing it can't even be defined as jazz guitar at some point. The dude literally used to get booed for playing jazz on a solid body.

>Pass didn't always play with that kind of classic style acoustic sound
And that's what I prefer.

Also here's the best guitar tone for me:

I saw Frisell live one night during his Stone residency last summer in a sold out set. He was playing standards with Tony Scherr on bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums, joking, swearing, telling stories and generally having a good time and sounding great.

He really feels like a character who's recorded output won't do him enough justice when he's gone. He has such a great ear for using effects and shit, too.

I would love to hear him and Zorn talking about the music and concepts kek There was one show in Paris dedicated to Marquis De Sade where Zorn had hardcore porn playing in the background. Can't imagine Frisell diggin that atmosphere

How are things going?

I'm the anon who was asking for your advice on how to go about playing al btw
>>
>>64168757
I don't think Frisell is quite as fuddy duddy as he often seems - as I said earlier when I saw him live at the Stone he was swearing quite a bit in his speaks, I think he's a bit like Robert Crumb who seems all super nerdy and awkward but is actually quite willing to be involved in all sorts of filth

Oh I remember. I hope you got it down, your playing was nice. I just got a looper, Jamman SXT or whatever, trying to figure it out

>pretending your sixth string is a someone playing double bass

Life is pain
>>
>>64169164
Yeah I got a boss rc-3 not too long ago and still Havnt figured it out completly. It sucks because you can't make any loop longer than the first track you lay down. Hopefully yours won't have that problem

I don't get it. What I like so much about jazz guitar is the blend of simple melodies, complex single-note soloing and shitton of advanced chords. That is just wankery to me. Respect to that guy though, RIP.
>>
>>64169074
Yeah his later career style is what I've judged him by but the Crumb comparison is very fitting. Ive only see him doing the Lennon stuff but would love to catch him at the stone. Saw Frith there not too long ago during his week long residency.
>>
>>64169509
reminded me of Michael Hedges who certainly isn't the best, but his playing is sure fun to watch and he was an innovator

When I got mine I was planning on using it to finally write some songs. Every time I just end up noodling over what I made though, then having no Idea where to take the song after. So six months later my improv has improved but I still Havnt finished writing shit.

Moral of the story is don't be me.

I think it's more of a practicing tool as well. I also think a band is essential for efficiency in songwriting but that's just me I guess.

pat metheny..............
>>
>>64170241
Well judging by your playing you would make a good as a soloist. And now that you got your looper you could just make your own backing tracks and be good to go. I guess it still wouldn't be the same though
>>
>>64170305
Pat Metheny is great, but he's made a lot of pretty boring music

I really like his recent Unity Band/Group stuff, though
