Mastering guy here. It depends on what sound you're going for. This sounds like it almost performed live in a room (plate verb? Idk), which is nice to me. Composition is nice but stereotypical, now don't get confused, stereorypical can be good. Who doesn't wanna listen to a nice piano melody that doesn't try to be all wacky or obscure?

Basically, it's nice.

make sure to detune your notes slightly if you're using maqams, their sound is defined by those slightly 'blue' notes.

most DAWs should be able to do this, they measure fine tuning in 'cents' or 'cent'

Most maqams have 2 or 3 notes slightly retuned, either up or down by about 25 cents (but you can use 20 or 30 of your DAW only does 10 cent increments)

So for example segah maqam would be:
F, G(flat 30cents), G#, A(sharp 30 cents), B, C, D(flat 30 cents).

I used this in a song once, pretty easy to use, just like a normal scale only more spicy

Why would you delete anything? If you're going to be in production, you have to realize you're never going to be Brian Wilson. I can definitely sympathize with being a perfectionist, but if it gets to a point where you're just deleting songs, that's ridiculous. Keep them for later, maybe you could come back to them in a few months or so and remaster them with new things you've learned and make them sound better, maybe you could use the songs for samples, or anything. Why anybody would get rid of their own music is beyond me. You could even just keep the stuff to listen to, you may be kicking yourself later.

I have such an attachment to my music, even if it's bad, someone deleting a song feels like someone burning the Mona Lisa. It's all art, just hang on to it.

Hello guys, sorry for an amateur question, I don't frequent these threads and I'm sort of a beginner with more serious production.

I use FL Studio (huehue) and I wanted to ask how I would achieve a dirtier sound, such as the one Burial has (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHtNPzaHO7k). It sounds underproduced and I like the sound. Of course I tried sticking reverb and filters and shit to the mix but I really don't know what I'm doing. What does it have to do with? Compressing? Filters?
>>
>>64162455
i think distortion is what you're looking for
>>
>>64162455
Saws on the synths with time amongst other types of distortion added. You really have to build he whole thing around your distorted melody and/or chords.

If you really want to, you can chop up something I did.

https://clyp.it/j344kecq
>>
>>64162795
I see, the drum samples should be distorted as well, right?

In general, how do you avoid having an over-produced or too clean or too FL Studio-like sound?

bump
>>
>>64162856
Well It's a step by step process for me so I'll say what I remember

A lot of EQing on each element and the whole composition, listening to things over and over again to make sure each bit sounds dirty enough and whether or not it would support it's counterparts

I also found it helpful to whack each individual thing plus the final piece through a limiter again and again, but at big decibel jumps for the ceiling and gain starting from the bottom working my way up the db numbers. That's just me though.
>>

Music theory, what is the best book or maybe youtube videos on music theory that I can watch to get good?

Programs, what are the best programs to get a realistic sounding orchestral sound (bla bla you will never get sound as good as the real one, don't care)

>>
>>64163384
You performing live? Use Ableton. If not FL is fine. Use kontakt samples. They sound nice and with some vallhalla reverb can sound amazing. Learn to not quantize everything and to have varying degrees of (I'm in class and forgot the word but here's a substitute word) volume hits.

Also, bassoon

Cut out high end, don't excite things. Use distortion and bit crushing. Burial is so simple desu I don't get the appeal and yet almost everyone in here tries to rip off his sound. Maybe because it is so simple.

if you ask for music theory i assume you can't play keys or aren't really a virtuoso. if that's the case you might give fl studio another chance as it has the best piano roll by far. it's actually laughable how crappy most daws are at midi editing and the best one at it is mocked by some.

Realistic rock/pop/ukulele/house/orchestral/house/insert every genre can be obtained in every daw. fl and quite a few others if not all lack high quality orchestral, you need vst's for that, like kontakt+orchestral libraries. you also need some hdd space for high quality samples.

you can sample at a specified tempo, but not resample at one. so when you're resampling or sampling at a non-specified tempo it will display a whole number as the tempo but there is actually a decimal point you can't see, so loops that say they're the same tempo can go out of sync. you can't record a new sample while another sample is playing (no playing a synth or drums or whatever over a sample and recording it onto a pad). you can only resample up to 4 samples at once, 2 if they're in stereo, and you can't resample a recorded pattern, only playing in real time. the start and endpoint knobs only do fine adjustments of like 100ms, other than that you have to play the sample through and hit the marker button to mark start and end points or exit and re-enter the start/end point menu to keep using the knobs to take off another 100ms. there's also no sampling across multiple pads or dividing an existing sample across multiple pads, so you would have to do what i just mentioned with a longer sample you recorded and keep duplicating it to new pads, unless you were going to stop the audio on whatever you were sampling from and restart it every time you recorded a new sample (also if you were to do this, it forgets the tempo you specified for each new sample). other than that, the pitch and timeshifting just never really sounded that great to me.
