Also shoutout to all the idiot fucks and teachers who never told me I needed to have hundreds of hours of community service and a lot of extracurricular involvement to be accepted by top schools. All I had was the GPA. They let me fucking die. I stayed in band all four years and got NOTHING for it. Fuck everything. Four years of marching in the afternoon, boiling heat in Texas. I can't believe it. I regret it all, and if I could I'd go back to the first day of freshman year, fucking quit band, and join groups like theater. I'd create and join clubs, become class president, act, join NHS, do community service, study for the SAT/ACT in the summers. I'd do student politics, join the debate team, do math competitions. I'd be actively involved in school and extracurriculars, sing in the choir, perform in the talent show.
Fuck me you're all so lucky. I wish I could have four years back with hindsight and purpose, a destination. I waited too long, and started too late. Columbia rejected me, even Rice. Fuck everything.

columbia, sarah lawrence, tufts, and harvey mudd are all more expensive and a lot of ivys are more expensive if you take away the room and board
and honestly community service isn't necessary. it's just that colleges want to see that youre varied in interest and do well where you apply yourself. i did orchestra for two years, play a few instruments, did stage crew, school magazine and debate (among a couple of other things). i have a pretty good gpa but not fantastic and pretty good test scores but not fantastic.
i can understand columbia rejecting you (i know someone who has a 98 gpa, does karate, plays 3 instruments very proficiently, was in nhs, and is very involved in his jewish community and got rejected from colubmia but accepted to dartmouth)

I love San Marcos, perfect location to get to Austin or San Antonio if you need a day trip. Love the river, campus, and bar scene (people usually say it's like a smaller Austin) although right now we're under a flash flood warning and those always suck here
