Never ever start with SFTB. If anything that should be the last album of theirs you listen to.
Start from the beginning and work your way through chronologically
Follow the guide if you're willing to put the effort into it. If not, just listen to their latest two releases (especially To Be Kind) as those are their most mature records and somewhat combine their earlier styles into something bigger. Nothing except for SFTB comes close imo, but SFTB isn't that accessible at first.
I started with SFTB and worked my way back to it all the way from the beginning. It is an amazing experience to hear it first and then listen to all the albums leading up to it and finally understanding why SFTB is so good. It's so different from listening to it when you have no experience with Swans compared to when you've listened to most of their earlier discog.
