The big problem with metal is that the arrogance and elitism of its community gets increasinly reflected in the music, those cringey metalheads that spam youtube comment sections will eventually go on to form bands and do the same thing that has been done over and over already with superficial lyrics about hate and being misunderstood and outsider to society that other metalheads are going to jerk over again. Truth is that in order for a genre to survive and thrive, it needs to progress, and in order for progress they need to accept inspiration from other genres. Metal is too self contained to progress any further. It has been around for 50 years now and there is not much left to experiment with, new bands are just circlejerking and paying tribute to other metal bands.
The best bands go beyond the genre that they represent, that is also true for metal. Take Agalloch for example, imho one of the best metal bands out there, they go beyond metal to get inspired, namely by accepting tropes and conventions from the post-rock genre and merging with it, and their music is pure wonderful.

Exclusive attitudes in the metal community are nearly as old as the metal community itself. Look at the bands that were cropping up in the early '80s. They basically called out everything that didn't cater to their interests, and started this divide between real metal and fake pop bullshit. The genre has survived this long. It doesn't need input from random anons on /metal/. People are going to do what they want to do. There's always going to be a diehard fan base for thrash, doom, black, and death metal, so you know those bands can just keep playing the same shit over and over, and they're always going to have a following.
However I don't completely disagree with you. Evolution does do some incredibly cool things once in a while. Just look at how jazz and death metal combined to make Atheist. The possibilities are out there.

Very underrated by /metal/, though I feel like they're releasing the same album over and over again with diminishing results.
