What's your favourite folk album?
Pic related

nice taste. either pic related or jackson c frank
>inb4 dad
Or Blood on the Tracks
>>64083529
Horse With No Name is a great song but America bores me to tears beyond that.
Anyway, pic related.
Before autist loses their shit, lets just establish that contemporary folk is applicable here too.
pic related is probably not actually my favorite, but I'll push for Bill in any thread I can.
>>64083269
Good pick though honestly I think the simplicity of Pink Moon is where he shines.
>>64083368
Someone recced me this a few weeks ago, so fucking great. Any of his other stuff worth listening to?
>>64083582
Duk Koo Kim is probably the best thing Mark's ever done. Great album. BotT is probably my favorite Dylan album too.
>>64083595
This album does not get posted enough on here. Anyone who's a fan of Ys needs to check it out.
>>64083595
it was a grower for me, some beautiful harmonies there. Sandman, Here, Clarice are some other faves
>>64083671
Oh boy! Here's a pic of Roy Harper going in deep on Newsom. I've wanted to share this with someone for a long time.
Great pick btw. My friend got me into Smog and they're tight. I prefer more melodic vocalists but Bill Callahan's voice is harrowing.
>>64083709
I'm on chamber folk kick at the moment so it's not really what I'm looking to listen to but down the line I may revisit it.
>>64083759
What a champ. I've heard that album was a huge influence for her, also for Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes. And yeah, Bill's voice is amazing. People probably use this comparison too much, but him and Leonard Cohen have this really neat way of sounding simultaneously expressive, and disinterested in what they're saying. Works so well with the type of lyricists that they are.
Speaking of muscians hanging out, here's Bill and Will Oldham.
Or Derroll Adams - Portland Town or The Tallest Man On Earth - The Wild Hunt
posting more bill
>>64083962
goddamn this thread might aswell just be a list of my favorite albums. Townes is the best
Joanna must really have a thing for hanging out with out folk singers

>I've heard that album was a huge influence for her, also for Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes.
Yeah, and that fact is how I mentally repel anyone who implies that Newsom or Pecknold aren't really well versed folk. They're both so educated in and outside of music and extremely talented. I think we're lucky to live in an era of contemporary folk that can draw influence from artists that went under appreciated in their time. Like this guy for example.

When folk singers can do this and make it work, it's incredible. Pic related is fantastic at it too, he's like an Italian Cohen.
>>64083269
Woodie Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads
>>64084130
Yeah its really frustrating to hear people dismiss those guys out of some misguided sense that they're being insincere. They know their shit.
pic related is another one of my favorites, and I'm pretty sure they're both fans of Bert too.
And I've never heard of those two guys you posted, definitely will check em out, I'm liking what I've heard so far.
>>64084315
Definitely. I think people confuse Pecknold with Father John Misty or something because I have no idea where else they get the idea that Fleet Foxes are disingenuous.
I really need to get into Bert Jansch. I have his s/t debut downloaded and I just know I'm going to love it. I really enjoy Davy Graham and as I understand it the two are fairly similar.
That Ryley Walker guy wears Morrison/Astral Weeks on his sleeve but really does the album justice in terms of texture and arrangements imo. His vocals are really nice as well and arguably more melodic than Morrison's, but it's nearly impossible match the soul of Morrison's vocals on that thing.
>>64084289
who is this qt 3.14?
honestly don't know how this album isn't more widely revered. No one can sing like Dave.
>>64084493
Yeah, Bert's the best. He's got some of the best guitar work out there. I prefer Jack Orion to his s/t but you still can't go wrong with starting there.
And that's cool to hear about Walker. Obviously Astral Weeks is such a classic, even more interested in checking him out now.
>>64084629
kinda looks like boxxy
>>64083962
This album literally has no skippable songs on it
>>64083269
John Stewart - California Bloodlines
Gene Clark - White Light
Tim Hardin - Tim Hardin 2
>not any mention of Lorca
Absolutely plebeian
don't let this thread die, please!
literally the greatest thread on /mu/ right now
not completely folk but one of my favorite albums of all time. Every song is amazing
>>64084710
Dave's voice is so great and charismatic. That man was a real treasure.

got a sauce?
>>64088257
It's that shitposter Aaron's gf.
Does the Denver sound/Gothic Country count as folk? 16 Horsepower, Slim Cessna and Munly are some of my favorite artists
>>64088320
Wew lad punching above his weight lol
What does /mu/ think about this album.
I absolutely fell in love with it when I listened to it driving up north in Colorado last fall.
>>64088370
Wonderful album. Basho was really amazing. It's pretty sad things never seemed to go his way in his life though.
Listen to Venus in Cancer by Basho if you haven't already. Actually, his whole discography is worth checking out if you ever have the time.
>>64088370
Just started getting into this, great album.
>>64088370
It's not his best, but absolutely everything Basho ever touched was phenomenal.
Probably this.
>>64087791
I also adore this, or maybe one of Kozelek's album's like Ocean Beach.
Is Rain Dogs considered experimental folk?
will's folk best
>>64083671
>Before autist loses their shit, lets just establish that contemporary folk is applicable here too.
Literally everything in this thread is contemporary folk, though. /mu/ doesn't know trad folk.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA0vpukI8D8
The Reckoning disc is her 'Blood On The Tracks.'
>>64089650
Dave Van Ronk and Bert Jansch could be considered traditional but yeah. The point was that there's always some autist losing their shit if you use the term "folk" to describe contemporary folk.
