To answer your question, this was a minor genre in the late 70s and early 80s. The most successful and significant band was The Jam, who were also one of the most successful punk bands. The Jam's entire discography is noteworthy, they were a great band. My personal favorite is Sound Affects, but they literally don't have an album that isn't noteworthy.
The only other major mod revival success was the one hit wonder "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors
