There were many of popular musicians during the first half of the 1900's that were Christians. Possibly the best and most influential of all of them, Duke Ellington, was one of them.

Well during the renaissance/baroque/classical era the church was the most affluent source of patronage, so clearly many of the great works from that period are going to be religious. Yeah bach was genuinely devout, but not many of his peers were. In addition, baroque/classical music is extraordinarily formulaic, and the few names you know from those eras were the innovators.

Art music always exists in tandem with popular music, and traditional music.
Sacred music is still being written even today, you just have to know where to look for it.
Look up composers Pärt, Tavener, Jenkins, Chesnokov etc. There are still great pieces being written for classical instruments and choirs, and with sacred subject matter.
