Original song file -> File compression to mp3/some other format -> Music file in someone's computer -> Video Editor -> Compression as the editor exports the video file -> Video file in somebody's computer -> Upload to youtube -> Further compression of the video file to better fit the google servers -> Video online -> Youtube video ripper -> Somebody else's computer.
With each compression, some quality is lost, so it's best to stop at the second step if possible.

It's usually your headphones, the compression usually bloats up the low frequencies, so if yours can't reproduce them all that well it really doesn't make a lot of difference.
It also cuts some high end, though it's sort of negligible depending on the song. In most songs they just give some detail to the drums and a "pristine" and "airy" quality to the music.
If you play an instrument, specially the bass, you start to notice these kind of things better.

I've listened TTNG and you are right, they are softer and slower. Besides, they seems to be very math-rock for my taste, almost to the point of the cliche and i dont like that. What i really love about TTT is that its an instrumental band, the heavy electronics, the awesome melodies and, of course, their drummer.
