Which spectralism did you listen to? I think what helped me appreciate it was listening to lots of Scelsi, Xenakis and Ligeti before finding out what Spectral Music was.
And I have yet to listen to Robert Ashley.

le noir de l'étoile by Grisey. it was a while ago and I've since come to love Ligeti and appreciate a certain amount of Scelsi's stuff, though I don't feel like i have any proper understanding of it at all.

Ashley's great btw, definitely one of my favourite artists of all time. you should give Tap Dancing in the Sand by him a listen, as well as Automatic Writing.
