Brand new is a meme because its not really emo. Lots of disparity, therefore memeworthy.
The unifying theme behind emo is the lyrics about personal problems, as opposed to anti-establishment in earlier punk. The instrumentals are like this just because. It just evolved into the style it is now.

I have listened to Just Got Back from the Discomfort and I really enjoyed it so I'll check out their other stuff. I also enjoyed Snowing a good amount. I think my favorite emo is still 90s emo so far though. I've loved Sunny Day Real Estate for a while now and I also quite like Sunny Day Real Estate, American Football, The Get Up Kids, Rites of Spring, and Mineral.
